emotions on today's election day, November 6th, 1860, could be unpredictable.
Ashton....................... (standing half naked at a mirror, unsure what dress to wear) I declare, I wish I could go out exactly like this.
Brett............................ (appeares) Ashton, I just have the most wonderful news. -- Oh, I beg your pardon.
Ashton....................... (laughes) Goodness, little sister. You're acting as though people were born with clothes on.
Brett............................ Ashton, I've had a message from Billy. He got here three days ago.
Ashton....................... He hasn't bothered to get in touch till now? Not very gallant.
Brett............................
Well, I'm sure that he had good reason. But that doesn't matter. All that's
important is that he's at
Ashton....................... Ahh my, how grand. - Oh, botheration.
Brett............................ What's the matter?
Ashton....................... Well, it... it's just that I didn't prepare James for Billy.
Brett............................ Oh, don't worry. I'll meat Billy outside. James won't even have to know that he's here.
Ashton....................... Of course, you know I'd love to see him too, but I have one of my silly old meetings. And I'm sure you two lovebirds would rather be alone, anyway. (Brett laughes) So you just give Billy my special love, you hear?
Brett............................ I will.
Ashton....................... And I'll fix it for next time with James. Now, you listen here, little sister. You be extra careful on those streets today - both of you. It's Election Day, and this town is just bound to go crazy. Especially if that stupid Yanks put that illiterate in the White House. (1)
Brett............................ Ashton?
Ashton....................... Oh, Brett honey, I didn't mean that Billy was a stupid Yank.
Brett............................ I know you didn't. And thank you. We will be careful. (leaves)

Billy............................. I'm sure, Charles was delighted, that you asked him to be your Best Man.
Charles....................... Unless he's begun to think I'm just another no-good Yankee.
Brett............................ He's your friend, Billy. He'd never think that.
Billy............................. I know.
Brett............................ Even if he chooses to fight for the South.
Billy............................. Oh, I'd miss him very much, if he did choose that. Very much. -- You're thinking about Orry, aren't you?
Brett............................ I love him, Billy. I really don't wanna hurt him. I was furious the night I left, and I said a lot of things that I'm sorry for now.
Billy............................. So, we're back to waiting for his permission.
Brett............................ No, just hoping for his approval. My family means as much to me as your's does to you.
Billy............................. I know.
Brett............................ And it means more to Orry than you can imagine.
Billy............................. Brett, we can't just wait for your brother to get his life in order. We've got our own lives to think about. Now, I don't know when I'll get leave, but when I do... when I do, I just want us to get married right away, you understand?
Brett............................ You sound so angry, Billy?
Billy............................. I love you, Brett, but we've waited long enough.
Brett............................ (nods - church bells) Saint Michael's church bells.
Billy............................. Must be the last election returns. I'd like to see what's going on. Would you feel uneasy walking outside with a Yankee officer?

Orry............................. Oh... have you heard from Virgilia?

When
Ashton and James return to Mont Royal, Orry declares to her that her revenge
plot on Billy has failed and it has claimed Forbes' life. Orry barrs her from
the Plantation for good, and on leaving, Ashton once again spills her poison of
hatred.
James..........................
(enters the hall with Ashton) Ashton, I still can't understand, why we drove half way to
Ashton....................... Don't be tiresome, James. I just didn't feel like waiting at some godforsaken flag stop.
Orry............................. Because you thought, Billy and Brett would never get there, didn't you, Ashton?
Ashton....................... I don't know what you mean.
Orry............................. Well, I am sorry to disappoint you, but Billy and Brett were on that train, in spite of everything you did to prevent it.
James.......................... Now, look here, Orry, what's this all about?
Orry............................. That is what your wife is gonna tell me. (grabs her, pulls her into the study)
Ashton....................... Oh, you're hurting me. (in the study) Orry, I swear, you look just like an old thundercloud.
Orry............................. It was your idea, wasn't it? A nice legal way for Forbes to murder Billy. (2)
Ashton....................... I don't know what you're talking about.
Orry............................. Ashton, you can't lie your way out of this one.
Ashton....................... Orry, you're frightening me. What if Mother heard you talk to me like that?
Orry............................. Stop it! It won't work! Madeline heard Forbes get the message from you about what time the train left
Ashton....................... If you think, I'd lower myself to deny the ravings of some sick-headed woman...
Orry............................. You shut your mouth, or I will! Whether you deny it or not, it doesn't matter. You plotted with Forbes.
Ashton....................... Who told you that? Not Forbes?
Orry............................. Forbes can't tell anybody anything. He's dead, Ashton. Thanks to your scheming.
Ashton....................... (shattered) Dead? (arouses) It was all your fault. You with that Yankee scum you call your friends. Well, I'm sorry that we didn't succede, because they all deserved to die.
Orry............................. You get outta here! (throws her out of the room) And you take your husband with you! You're no longer part of this family!
Ashton....................... Gladly. But you remember this: My husband is part of the new government. And he'll make sure it knows how to deal with traitors. (leaves, James follows puzzled)
Orry............................. (to Charles, shattered) I don't know what happened to her.
Charles....................... I do. It's happening all over the country. Bad apples taking over the barrel, Orry.
(1) Director's error: When Ashton returns to Mont Royal after the failed murder plot on Billy, the entrance side windows are enlightened from the ouside, but the windows above the door is dark. The reason lays in the different locations for inside and outsode of Mont Royal. So the windows arrangement of the outside has to be faked by a backdrop from the inside. The upper windows there would clearly have been enlightened also by the outside lamps on both sides of the door.
The backdrop for the entrance door is well recognizable in episode 7 scene 26, when Justin pulls Adeline out of the building and slams the door shut. In this case, the enlightning of the backdrop was erroneous.
(2) Director's error: When orry confronts Ashton in the study, his knotted to a perfect ribbon. During the arguments, the scarf suddenly is just slung around his heck, to be back in perfect shape when Ashton leaves the house.

Bent............................ Neither the North nor the South is prepared for war, though they do nothing but threaten it. The war, when it comes, will go on and on. Neither side will know how to fight it or how to end it. Longer it lasts, better it is - for those of us who serve no side but our own.
Burdetta..................... You're counting on a blockade of Southern ports? (1)
Bent............................ Very good, Burdetta. There's one thing that I learned in the Army: There's nothing but a good war for making money.
Burdetta..................... What if there is no blockade?
Bent............................ (slightly aroused) Madam, you are talking to a military genius.
Burdetta..................... (laughes)
Bent............................ Blockade of Southern ports is inevitable. Then your investment will make you richer than your late husband ever did.
Burdetta..................... Sometimes I think you love his money more than you love me.
Bent............................ Well, I do love his money. And I don't remember to extend the emotion to include you. (kiss)
Burdetta..................... You must love me. I can hardly mistake avarice for passion.
Bent............................ My dear, dear Burdetta, if you didn't have the cash to invest in my ship, I'd be in bed with someone else who did.
Burdetta..................... You are such a devil. I wonder how wise I am to travel south with you.
Bent............................ Well, once I've shed my uniform, you would be unwise to trust me down there alone with your late husband's money. You just suit yourself.
Burdetta..................... I do have friends who'd very happy to see me again in the South.
Bent............................ And I have enemies who will be surprised.

George
is deeply impressed over Orry's courage and pride, to travel north in these
dangerous times, only to pay him out on grounds of pure fairness. Then a
angered mob gathers outside and demands Orry to be delivered as a traitor.
Virgilia proudly brags to have ordered the mob. When windows were smashed,
George and Orry confront the men from an upper balcony with long guns in hand,
and George succees with urgenty the mob to turn off again.
George........................ This is why you risked your life? To bring me money?
Orry.............................
What do you mean? It's your money. Belongs to you, not the
George........................ I... I don't know what to say, I lever expected that. But then again, knowing you, maybe I should have. There's not a lot of honor between people these days, Orry. You're a crazy fool, but you got more than your share. (stones crashing through a window)
mobber ..................... Hey, you traitor lover!
mobber ..................... Now we hear, you're a Southern sympathizer, Hazard!
Virgilia........................ (appears) They're here to take you. And I sent for them.
George........................ In the name of God, why?
Virgilia........................ Because he's a traitor. He's a southern traitor. And he and his kind murdered Grady!
George........................ The militia killed Grady!
Virgilia........................ I don't care! Justice will be done! (Constance and butler Raymond pull her out) I hope they kill you! I hope they kill you! I hope they kill you!...
mobber ..................... Give him to us!
mobber ..................... Send him out, Hazard!
mobber ..................... You better give him to us, Hazard! (stone crashing in)
George........................ There's a local freight train eastbound at eleven. I think, it would be best.
Orry............................. I'll be on it. I won't endanger your family.
George........................ Virgilia's already done that.
Orry............................. I can slip out the back.
George........................ Like hell you will. They're probably back there anyway. You leave this to me. (to the servants) You people get back up in your rooms and stay there, please! (takes two shotguns, stone crashing in)
Orry............................. Back in battle.
George........................ Follow me. (steps out on the stair top with Orry)
mobber 1................... Lynch him! Let's rush them! (mob steps forward)
George........................ (they aim at the leaders) Well, come on then, it's an old Army rule: The man who gives the order leads the charge.
mobber 2................... Give him up, Hazard. He's a Southener.
George........................
This man is no traitor. We were in the same class at
mobber ..................... (a little calmer) He's a traitor.
mobber ..................... Come on.
George........................ You back there, you put that gun away.
mobber 1................... We can take him.
mobber 2................... Take him yourself. It ain't worth getting killed over. (leaves)
mobber ..................... Hazard wouldn't protect a Southern traitor. (mob dissolves)
Orry............................. That was close.
George........................ We're not out of the woods, yet. I'll feel a lot better once you're on that train.

George and Orry promptly ride off the the depot. That is when Virgilia turns to leave the house as well, but Constance sees that she wants to take costly wardrobe and silverware with her. Constance lets her go with that but makes very clear, that this was the very last time for Virgilia.
Orry............................. I hope we will be.
George........................
Of course. (they ride off,
Virgilia........................ (appears at the stairs) I'm going now before George get's back.
Virgilia........................
It's the last time,
Virgilia........................ I have no tolerance of my enemies, even when they come in the shape of a friend.
Virgilia........................ I say this for you, Constance: You tried, time and again you tried to keep me in this family. And I thank you for that. But it didn't work, and it never will.
Virgilia........................ No, what's in my blood isn't in theirs. Do you know that I look at my brothers and my mother, and I can't believe that I was ever a part of this family. They don't know me at all. They don't care about my cause or my struggle or... ye-ye-yes, they'll pay it lip service. But they won't sacrifice anything for it. They will not endure cruelty or hardship.
Virgilia........................ Then let them come. Freedom has to be born in blood and fire. Only they can wash away my sin.
Virgilia........................
Oh, I have sinned. I married a man with black skin. That's my sin in the eyes
of the world. But,
Virgilia........................
Virgilia........................ 'Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.'
Virgilia........................
I have means. Goodbye,
(1) Director's error: When Constance climbs the stairs to meet Virgilia there, an electrical device is to been seen on the wall at the stair bottom (a movement or humidity sensor?) Later on in this scene, the device is hidden by different camera angles behind a wooden bar.

George........................ Orry, what are you going to do if the South offers you a commission?
Orry............................. They already have, a brigadier with their new War Department. I guess, a bad leg is no handicap at that rank. But I'm with Madeline now, so...
George........................ Thank God for that.
Orry.............................
I just hope I don't have to leave
George........................
They've offered me a spot on the general staff. And I got to give them an
answer, which I don't have yet. But
Orry.............................
So does Jeff Davis. - You know, years ago, John Calhoun said, that
George........................ Well, if we have to meet like that, I'd... rather we never met again. (takes out the two half Dollar notes) Do you remember this?
Orry.............................
(laughes) Our ten dollar bet that I would graduate
from
George........................ That's right. Maybe it brought us some luck back then. Why don't we keep each half and put it back together when the war is over.
Orry............................. (takes one part, thoughtfully) When the war is over. George, can you see anything we could have done to... to stop all this?
George........................ I don't know. I... I think we had a chance somewhere alone the line, and we missed it.
Orry............................. Or threw it away. (train rolls in and halts)
US Officer.................. What are we stopping for?
George........................ I'm George Hazard of Hazard Iron. I make those cannons. Where're you headed?
US
Officer..................
George........................ Special passenger. This man's on official business for the War Department.
US Officer.................. (points to the next car) Plenty of room in that one.
George........................ Much obliged. - Orry, just a minute. (exchanges their cockades) You might as well wear the real thing. (they embrace, Orry drives off)
