Two political supporters uf James Huntoon working to South Carolina's secession are present at his wedding to Ashton. In 1859, James invites them to the noble establishment of Madame Conti after a speech in New Orleans.
The owner of the noble pleasure house in New Orleans conveys her ladies to James Huntoon and his supporters. Elkanah Bent involves her into a conversation to get more informations about the woman on a portrait picture and learning that the former prostitute was Madeline's mother and a quarter negro..

she undertakes an abortion to Ashton
and warns Madeline, not to bring herself in danger with
her helpfulness.
The doctor looking for Madeline finds on malnutrition and prescribes a tonic to strenghen her
condition. Justin sees a
chance and continues to feed her the tonic because it contains laudanum to calm
her down. (in the novel to the movie, this character is called Dr. Alonzo

On the return trip, the conductor urges all passengers to leave the car after the train has stopped at Harpers Ferry by John Brown's men. He points out that one railroad man has already been shot.

Orry hired the Pinkerton detective Haller in Richmond to investigate on Madeline's whereabouts. Haller finds out about a connection to lawyer Colbert but cannot find Madeline herself.

Young colored boy Michael is saved by Madeline from getting snatched for work duty on the Charleston defenses and then brings Madeline to his refugee camp on the outskirts of town where his sick mother is. By this visit, Madeline finds her task to charitabely help these poor refugees with food. Later, Michael is snatched to work nevertheless but saved by Rafe Beaudeen from shoveling rifle pits.
Michael's mother, a former slave from Tennessee, is sick when she arrives at the refugee camp in Charleston. Later on, she takes part in distributing food organized by Madeline.

The gambler and former officer Raphael
"Rafe" Beaudeen helps Madeline out of precarious
situations during her stay in Charleston. He constantly presses her with his
confessions of love she cannot return. When she declines his financial help for
the refugees, he secretly buys her "Resolute" plantation. Later he
also finds and rescues some kids falsly recruited for digging work. When he
assists Madeline in her defense against Elkanah Bent, he gets shot down by
him in the streets and dies.
The sonewhat nerdy owner of the boarding house where Madeline lives in Charleston wants to warn her on Rafe Beaudeen but later is fascinated by Elkanah Bent's manners.

The owner of the small tavern and store not far from Mont Royal keeps on fighting against rights of the Blacks even after the war is over and forms a local cell of the Ku-Klux-Klan, supported by the former Confederate Captain and equally fanatic Jack Jolly. Together, they took up fight against Madeline's school and Madeline himself. Then Gettys gets to be a tool in the evel plans of Isabell Hazard to get the Blacks to an new form of dependency by fraudulent contracts. At the decisive attack on Mont Royal, both get shot and killed.

Elkanah Bent finds himself with amnesia in a sanatorium in Richmond after having fallen down a cliff. A docter questions a nurse on his state and finds that after Bent uttered allegations of being Napoleon, that the man is to be send out to the streets.

The banker discusses several times with Cooper on business plans. But he doesn't agree to finance Cooper's plans to explot Mont Royal for phosphates as long as Madeline is the legal manager there.
The speaker leads the local gathering for colored men of the Democratic Party.. He is impressed by the couragious and poignant statement from Isaac Keno and names him the county delegate to the upcoming convent in Charleston.

Issac and Jane get married in the local barn chapel by a colored preacher, after what they celebrate right there joyfully with there friends, music and dance.
When Madeline goes on a walk and gets gets harrased by Gettys and Jolly, Mr. Jenks appears and clears the situation. He tells Madeline that he is sent out by a Charleston bank to explore for phosphates in the ground.

The colored man presides the constitutional
convent in Charleston. There Issac Keno delivers another
much-noticed speech, showing up that in reallity there are no differences
between Whites and Blacks any more.
The charleston blacksmith (picture to the right)
has to be convinced by George with some force to
deliver the long overdue saw blade to Mont Royal quickly.
