Daughter and secold child of William and Maude Hazard. The smart woman engages most intensely in the abolitionist movement and frequently sparks family feuds over it, especially related to the befrieded Main family from the South. There, she helps slave Grady to run off to the North, meets and marries hin there and lives with him in poor conditions until Grady gets shot during John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. Virgilia escapes the assylum with the help of Congressman Sam Greene, who is courting for her. During the war, Virgilia self-sacrificingly serves as a hospital nurse, but struggles to give Southern wounded equal care as ordered. Several times, she uses the support of Sam Greene, so she finally has to give herself in to him. When Greene departs her after the war, she shoots him and was then convicted and hanged for this.

Second son and third child of William and Maude Hazard. After his West Point graduation, George fights alongside his friend Orry Main in Mexico. After that, he marries Constance Flynn, engages in the management of the family enterprise "Hazard Iron" after his father's death, and gets to father himself of a daughter. At the start of the war, he gets torn between his own views and the friendship to the Main family from the South. He first serves as military advisor to President Lincoln, and later in a field commission. His nemesis Elkanah Bent murderes his wife after the war has ended, what pushes George mentally into a dark pit. Only Madeline, widow of his old friend Orry and asking him for help, sets his aims to new shores. So he participates in rebuilding the Main plantation, stopps his sister-in-law's fraudulent activities and finally catches and executes Elkanah Bent.

Lovingly and strong woman with irish decent. She gets to know George Hazard during the Mexican war and marries him shortly after in his home town in Pennsylvania. She supports George in keeping the family friendship to the Main's and especially to Orry. And she proves a strong sense of family by taking in ahd helping her sister-in-law Virgilia several times despite of her extreme views. In 1860, she delivers George's daughter Hope. During the Civil War, she is an aid to her mother-in-law Maude Hazard with Stanley being to week, Isabel being to much focussed on success and the other men being off to war. When the war is over, she gets a victim of Elkanah Bent in his effort to turture his preceived enemies.

In the Civil War, he serves as a sharpshooter and has to go against Charles in several occasions. But he loyaly stands to the Union, regardles of his marriage to Charles' cousin Brett Main from the South. After the war, he departs to California with Brett and doesn't appears thereafter.
