Owner of the plantation auf "Resolute", South Carolina, neighbor to Mont Royal. Justin charmingly and obligingly courts to far younger Madeline Fabray, but shows his true face as soon as they get married, being an unpredictable and domineering man using women and slaves as tools to his only will. He forces his well-broughtup and educated wife into her role by force and tries to supress her kind-harted treatment to others so that this marriage soon renders unhappy. In spite of havin drugged Madeline for some time with Laudamum, she finally escapes to her secretly beloved Orry Main to Mont Royal and in the process wounds him badly in the face. Justin, having recrouted a militia company at the beginning of the war, kidnaps Madeline back to his plantation, but is confronted by Orry to a fight and dies by falling out of a window.
