The cadet and drill instructor is living in a
state of complely distorted self-awareness and practices his sadistic
tendencies at his underlings. When cadets George Hazard and Orry Main get him dismissed from the
academy, he swears to take revenge. With the help of his biological father, Senator Edwards, he returns to
the military and sends George and Orry during the Mexican War into a suicide
mission where Orry receives a grave wound with life-long effects.
Thereafter, Bent surfaces again at the start of
the Civil War, organizing brockade runner vessels with the help of wealthy
favoritives like Burdetta
Halloran to import luxury goods and get enormours profits from it. When he
replaces Burdetta with Ashton
Huntoon as his running affair, she reports her knowledge to General Orry Main, wo successfully stopps Bent's
scheemings. Together with Ashton, Bent gets Orry's wife Madeline to going
into hiding. Then, he builds up his own arsenal of weapons to strike a coup
against Jefferson Davis
and put himself to power. This scheme also is crashed by Orry Main. After the detonation of the
powder magazine he is believed to be dead, but ultimately gets away with bad
burn marks and an even more distorted mind only.
After the war, Bent resorts solely to his plan on revenge against his perceived enemies. First, he knifes down clueless Orry Main, but is thrown down a cliff by Ashton. After some time in a hospital, he moves North, kills Constance Hazard to bring pain and suffering to her husband, his fellow cadet George Hazard. Then, he kidnaps Charles Main's son Gus to the Indian Territory. But when George and Charles set out together in pursue, they manage to get him and extinguish him finally.

The shy cadet from a simple family in Ohio would have to leave the academy if it weren't George and Orry to help him out financially, and he overcomes his resentments on the slave-holding upper society with this. When he gets hurt by Bent in overreaching drill, Orry and George hack out a plan to get Bent dismissed. 20 years later, Fisk is a Union major in the Civil War and appears at Mont Royal with orders to put the plantation to the torch, but strongminded Clarissa Main is able to prevent it. Fisk never learned that he was on the property of his former friend Orry Main.

Libby Prison, notoriously wellknown for its bad conditions, was commanded by the equally cruel Captain Turner. In contrast to his trimmed appearance and his low pitched talks, he appearantly takes juy in humiliating prisoners under disregard of martial laws. Especially U.S. General George Hazard, who himself tries to stand in for right and equal treatment even under this circumstances, quickly gets a main target to Turner's ways. When Orry and Charles appear to take their friend out of this prison under pretense, Turner wants to resist, starts a fight and dies by falling into his own knife.
