The estate was erected west of the Feliciana region around 1830 as the residence of the Barrow dynasty with about 3,000 acres of cotton fields and provided a luxury outcome for its inhabitants. When Greenwood had grown to 12,000 acres and 750 slaves around 1850, it was transfered to sugar canes. With upcoming anti slavery sentiments in the North, William Ruffin Barrow went to politics and was one of the initiating forces for Louisiana's secession. Therefore, Barrow was a special target of Union forces during the Civil War and was killed on March 22nd, 1862.
Due to the slave's emancipation and production shutdown, the family had to sell the estate after the war, but many buyers also had no luck there, until it went to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Percy in 1915. With the help of a big family, they worked it as a family farm and lived there also. Beginning in 1940, the Percy's opened the house to the public. On August 1st, 1960, lightning struck the building and it burned to the ground - with the exception of the 28 outside colums.
1968, Walton Barnes purchased the house with 300 acres of land. With his som Richard, he started to rebuild it in its historical form, completed not until November of 1984. Then, a french-canadian movie producer laid eyes on the plantation, made scenes of "Louisiana" there and completed the landscape arrangements and decorations of it in the process. Scenes of four more movies were produced there: "Drango", "North and South", "North and South Book II" and "Sister, Sister".
Today, Greenwood Plantation is the home of Richard Barnes and his family and can be visited again.
