Williams Mansion was constructed in Charleston, SC by wealthy merchant George Walton Williams in 1876. The Estate in victorian style made it to 200,000 Dollars, very costly for the time being. It consisted of about 78,600 square feet of floor space in 35 rooms, 23 fire places, a music room with 20 on 33 feet and a great window dome 43 feet above the floor, three great balconys and a main stairs up to 72 feet of altitude. The main hall is more than 66 feet in length, 21 feet in width and 21 feet in height. Williams Mansion this way is the largest single residence in Charleston.
The property was noted 1780 for the first time, being owned by Governeur Charles Pinkney and being part pf the Lowndes estate where George Washington made a stopp in 1791. Very wealthy and respected business man George Walton Williams bought 16 Meeting Street in 1862 for 40,000 Confederate Dollars. After the war, he decided to erect there a big estate as part of the reconstruction of downtown Charleston. Construction took 5 years and provided work for lots of people else being out of income in these difficult times.
After William died in 1903, the estate had several subsequent owners and differend uses, and in that time it became the new designation as "Calhoun Mansion" in honor of the South Carolina statesman who had died in 1850 but who stood in no relation to this property. After usage as a hotel since 1972, Charlestonian citizen and art collector Howard Stahl bought it in 2004, redesignated it to a museum and remodled it back to its original appearance. With the civil unrest around Confederate symbols it was re-designated as "Williams Mansion". The house is still in use as Stahl's private residence, but parts of it as well as his collection of antiquaries can be visited by guided tours.

Comparisons Movie To Reality
Movie: season 2, grand stairs real: hall with stairs
Movie: season 2, great parlor real: great parlor
Movie: season 2, library real: library
Probably with Calhoun Mansion, well known from season 1, wasn't available for the time of filming on season 2, production was switched to an equally opulent estate, this time in far away California. Situated in a wealthy area of mansions of Los Angeles, the luxury estate (construction year unknown, but surely no historical building) shows several differences to Calhoun Mansion, so that scenes had to be done in "night setting" to not let this be seen too much. Exterior filmings were completely impossible for that reason. Opening views were taken from material made for episodes 1 to 6.
"Freemont Mansion" is located in a low-traffic area of Los Angeles, cornered by Fremont Place and West 8th Street, in between more of those opulent homes. It is a modern building, just two stories high mit flat roof and historically made-up facade, surrounded by greens, an driveway from the street, and a pool with event pavillon in the back. The round bulge in the facade opposit the front door can be seen above the grand stairs in internal scene views.
Comparing the interior views today with the filmings, one might notice that, in contrast to then Calhoun Mansion, the furniture and most of the decorations were replaced by props for the filming. Filming only took place in a few rooms of the vast mansion, in particular at the entrance hall with the striking stairs, the great parlor, the library and one bedroom upstairs.
