The United States Custom House was built between 1853 and 1879 with a break during war and reconstruction years 1859 to 1870. The merchendary building of 280 on 165 inch symbolizes the high position of Charleston and his harbor in the worldwide trade of the days by its classic-roman style and the lavish use of marble. The inside is commanded by the trading hall being two stories high and having offices attached to all sides (with an gallery running around over the offices and being supportet by 14 colums). Trades are being made there to this day - supported by the goal to keep this building "alive" - despite having a more suitable installation in service since the 1960s.

The filming took place at the main front stairs as well as on the court to the right (the troops in camp before the first civil war battle). To flag the buiding as the War Department according to the script, a plate with "War Department" was put up on the porticus to cover up "United States Custom House".

The Heyward-Washington House is a historical, three-story brick building, built by Thomas Heyward, Jr. (a signer of the Declaration of Independence) in 1770 to 1771 (kitchen added in 1840). His name derives from George Washington being hosted here in 1791 on his tour through the Southern states. It was acquired by the Charleston Museum in 1929 and opened to the public. Since 1970 it is listed as a historical building.

This single scene used the entry hall and the main entrance of the legendary "Mills House" hotel in Charleston, SC. The building was raised in 1853 and is used as a hotel ever since.

PS: A sudden rain shower on the day of filming forced the crew to relocate a part of the scene to the inside and to place the covered carriage right in front of the entry stairs.

Still unknown are the locations for Lincoln's cabinet room, the entrance hall and adjecting rooms. But the locations used were selected and decorated very carfully to the original White House in Washington, D.C. (at this time, the East Wing didn't exist and the President's executive offices were at the east side of the 2nd floor, now part of the fully private floor). For illustration, some comparisons from movie scenes to historic depictings of the original White House of the time.

Movie: cabinet room                                                         Real: White House, advisory room,
(showcase between windows, message shelf to the right)                               today "Lincoln's Bedroom" (1863)

Movie: cabinet room                                               Real: Weißes Haus, Presidential Office
(fire place with mirror, entrance door to the right)                               today "Lincoln Bedroom" (1900)

Movie: cabinet room (reen walls,                                       Real: White House, "Green Room"
dark red doors with white frames)

The "Green Room" in the White House never served as the cabinet room, also the arrangement of doors and windows doesn't match the filming location.

Movie: entrance hall with assistants                                  Real: East Sitting Hall (1947), the the entrance to the
(round window, doors to the sides)                                        cabinet room and Presidential offices

Historically, there was an error implemented by placing the cabinet room (White House) into the War Department. Also, Brett's view out her hotel window to the camping troops (start of episode 7) indicates, that this must be residing inside the department.

Location Overview On "Lincoln's Executive Mansion Washington"

Cabinet room and backroom (Lincoln with George) to the left, entry hall with small fence with door in the center, visitor room (Lincoln with Constance) to the right.
