Start 2.41, Length 3.56

> Brett Hazard

> Semiramis (no text)

> Lt. Freeman, US

> Yankee with red beard

> Yankee with high hat (no text)

> Statists: US soldiers, marching band, pedestrians

Location: US War Department, outside

June 1861: Brett hears in Washington that Billy has been assigned to the sharpshooters. As she wants to get off to meet him, she and Semiramis are molested by some Yankees.

In the two months since the capture of Fort Sumter, Jefferson Davis has assambled a force of 22.000 Confederate soldiers at Manassas who are determined to fight for the South's independence. In Washington, D.C. Lincoln has amassed 40.000 volunteers who share his commitment to preserve the Union. Both sides anticipate a short war and a victory for their cause.

(soldiers from different regiments in tents at the War Department, improvised drills and parades)

Brett............................ (at the steps of the War Department) Lieutenant Freeman?

Freeman...................... Mrs. Hazard, Ma'am, how are you?

Brett............................ Fine, just fine. I'm looking for my husband. You haven't seen him?

Freeman...................... Yes, Ma'am, he left here about an hour ago. He's positioning a battery over by the Rock Creek area.

Brett............................ Oh thank you. Do you really thing, the Southern army will invade Washington?

Freeman...................... Well, with the rebs... excuse me Ma'am, the Southern army only twenty miles away, well, better to be safe than sorry. But I'm sure, your husband will do know more about a possible battle now that he's got his transfer to the sharpshooters.

Brett............................ Sharpshooters?

Freeman...................... I'm sorry, Ma'am, I thought you knew.

Brett............................ No, I... Thank you, Sir, for the information. (walks down the steps)

Freeman...................... (follows) Someone will be heading out that way. Why don't you let me get an escort?

Brett............................ I can find my way, Lieutenant, thank you. (walks to the carriage, two Yankees follow)

Yankee 1..................... Little Miss Molasses with your darky. What you hear from Jeffie Davis, honey child?

Brett............................ (silent)

Yankee 1..................... Something wrong with your hearing, Reb?

Brett............................ We don't want any trouble. Please, youst leave us alone.

Yankee 1..................... Why don't you tell that to your people waving rebel flags and attack our troops coming through Baltimore? (1)

Brett............................ (to the 2nd Yankee) Take your hands off that bridle.

Yankee 1..................... We're white men. (grabs her) You can't talk to us like that. You're talking to us like we're slaves... ah!

Brett............................ (beats him with the whip) Giddiap! (drives off fast)

(1) Historical: Suthern sympathizers in fact felt threatened by Union troops marching in Baltimore on April 19, 1971 on their way from one train station to another, and they provoked a shooting. This insurrection is today known as "Pratt Street Riot". (Wikipedia)

Start 6.37, Length 2.02

Participants:

> 1st Lieutenant Billy Hazard, US

> Brett Hazard

> Statists: US soldiers

Location: gun position at the Potomac River

The conversation with her husband shows new differences as well, when Billy prowdly claims to take part at writing history, and when Brett replies that he will shoot at Southerners like her.

Billy............................. (instructs a sergeant) Primary field of fire, all four guns, is across the river, Georgetown to the Chain Bridge. Secondary position will be to cover the northern approaches, if the left flank is turned.

Brett............................ (driving up) I'm looking for my husband, Lieutenant Hazard. -- Thank you, Sir.

Billy............................. Excuse me, Sergeant. Brett!

Brett............................ Billy.

Billy............................. I got a transfer. I'm gonna be in the First U.S. Sharpshooters. It's a brand new unique regiment, just authorized by Congress. I didn't want to tell you about time till it came through. Isn't it great? (1)

Brett............................ You'll be in the thick of the fighting. Why couldn't you stay with the engineers?

Billy............................. Brett, I'm a soldier. Soldiers are just supposed to fight. Our ancestors just fought so the United States could be a free nation. I've the chance to be part of it, to make history.

Brett............................ By killing Southeners?

Billy............................. I didn't mean your family. I know, there are a lot of Southeners, that love the Union and don't want war.

Brett............................ But they're gonna fight for the Confederacy. Good people are gonna be killed, Billy. Is that the kind of history you wanna make? --

Billy............................. It's gonna be alright. Everybody says, the war will be over in one big battle. Now, when I leave for camp, I want you to go to Belvedere and stay with my mother.

Brett............................ What about Semiramis?

Billy............................. I'll make arrangements for her to get savely to Mont Royal. Why are we fighting?

Brett............................ Because you never told me any of this, Billy. I don't wanna anything happen to you. (they embrace)

07.04 - Two Southern Officers Leave Mont Royal

Start 8.39, Length 4.22

Participants:

> Brigadier General Orry Main, CS (in grey uniform)

> Captain Charles Main, CS (in grey uniform)

> Clarissa Main

> Madeline LaMotte

> Cuffey

Location: Mont Royal, driveway and veranda

Orry (at rank and in uniform of a Confederate States Brigadier General) and Charles (as Confederate Captain of Cavalry) say goodbye to Clarissa and Madeline and to Mont Royal.

Charles....................... If I'm to believe the Charleston recruiting officer, I'd better ride day and night to reach Virginia, before they whip the North and the war is over.

Orry............................. I don't quite think, it's gonna be that easy, Charles

Charles....................... Most of us were born on horseback. We ride circles around those Yankees.

Orry............................. Charles, they're three of them for every one of us.

Charles....................... Hey, I'll take those odds any day. It's a shame that a general gotta rub shoulders with the president of the Confederacy instead of riding with Wade Hampton's Legion. Orry, I'm gonna miss you.

Orry............................. You are a lot more than a cousin to me, Charles. You are like a little brother. So I don't want you to take any unneccessary chances.

Charles....................... You know me.

Orry............................. That's what worries me. (they laugh)

Clarissa....................... Charles reminds me so much to Orry, when he went off to fight in Mexico.

Madeline.................... He came back from that war, and they'll both come back from this one.

Clarissa....................... I can't believe, what happened. Our dearest friends, the Hazards, Billy, my son-in-law, torn apart by war.

Madeline.................... Maybe it won't last very long.

Clarissa....................... I do hope so, my dear.

Madeline.................... (to the men) The two handsomest men in the Confederacy.

Clarissa....................... You even make those uniforms look good.

Charles....................... Watch out, Aunt Clarissa. I may have to take you with me, I'm not sure I can live without that your corn bread.

Clarissa....................... Oh, dear Charles.

Madeline.................... (to Orry) I'm not ready to say goodbye.

Orry............................. I never wanted this war. But we would be without pride, without honor, if we let the North tell us how to live. There are some things worth fighting for, Madeline. This land, our families, our way of life... and you. I can't wait till you become Mrs. Orry Main. And once your divorce is final, I will get you in front of a preacher quicker than you can say, 'I do'.

Madeline.................... I do.

Charles....................... (to his horse) Sport, the war's gonna be over that time, the general gets through saying goodbye to the beautiful lady. (mounts)

Orry............................. Charles can't wait to get on the road now that he's heard, those Virginia belles outshine even our South Carolina beauties. (to Clarissa) Mother, you take care of yourself.

Clarissa....................... Oh Orry, I promised myself I wouldn't cry.

Orry............................. Now, there'll be no time for tears. You'll be too busy running this plantation. (kiss, kiss with Madeline)

Charles....................... There's a war waiting on us. Time's a-wasting.

Orry............................. (mounts) Cuffey.

Cuffey......................... Don't worry about nothing, Mr. Orry. I'll take care of everything.

Orry............................. I know you will. (rides off)

Charles....................... Race you to the war! (they ride out together)

Directors Error: Without to see whan Orry takes off his leather gloves and puts them on again, he has unclad hands at some times.

Start 14.10, Length 1.11

Participants:

> Justin LaMotte

> State Militia General

> Mr. Clay, governmental official

> Statists: two more goverment officials, slave at the door, coach driver

Location: Resolute, outside

At Resolute, Justin, marked-up with a shining scar over his left eye, gets appointed as Colonel to organize and train a state militia unit.

Justin.......................... I must say, gentlemen, I consider this a great honor, and I thank you.

Militia General........... You do us the honor, Mr. LaMotte, for accepting your commission. All of us on the militia general staff feel your qualifications make you an ideal colonel to turn out green volunteers into soldiers to defend South Carolina.

Justin.......................... I shall start recruiting in my district immediately, Sir.

Clay............................. May I tell you how much we enjoyed your hospitality, Colonel LaMotte. Although I must say, I did miss seeing your lovely wife. Is Mrs. LaMotte ailing?

Justin.......................... Mrs. LaMotte is no longer residing at Resolute.

Militia General........... You'll have to forgive Mr. Clay. He'd been in legislature at Columbia since the Fort Sumter crisis and wasn't aware of your domestic situation.

Justin.......................... My domestic situation is of no concern to anyone, Sir. Gentlemen, good day. (walks off)

Militia General........... Good day, Sir.

Historical: The organization of state militia units was common before the Civil War and was expended widely since 1860. Contrary to the state troops, the militia remained under the chief command of the respective state and were /in the south mostly because of the states-right-stance) rarely "borrowed" to the central government.

07.07 - Back In Uniform

Start 15.21, Length 1.07

Participants:

> Colonel George Hazard, US (in blue uniform, now with full beard)

> Constance Hazard

Locatopn opening: Belvedere, outside, by night

Location scene: Belvedere, George's room

Auf Belvedere bewundert Constance ihren Mann in seriner neuen Uniform. Aber ähnlich wie Orry meint auch George, dass er eigentlich nicht vorhatte, jemals wieder eine Uniform zu tragen.

Constance.................. Well, sure and you're a fine figure of a man, George Hazard. You look as handsome in that uniform as you did the first night we danced together in Mexico. (kiss)

George........................ After the Mexican war I swore I'd never wear a uniform again. But I just can't sit here in Lehigh Station while the country is being torn in half. I agree with the president, the Union must be preserved. (takes the parade hat in his hand) But regulations or not, they'll have to court-martial me before I wore this rediculous hat.

Constance.................. (laughs shortly) Even I'd have to think twice before wearing that thing.

George........................ I shouldn't even be going to Washington. I should have requested a field command.

Constance.................. Now, George, the president wan't you on his staff. And it's not just because you're a West Pointer. It's because he knows an exceptional man, just as I do.

07.08 - Farewell Party For George

Start 16.28, Length 2.25

Participants:

> Colonel George Hazard, US

> Constance Hazard

> Maude Hazard

> Stanley Hazard

> Isabel Hazard

> Statists: guests

Location: Belvedere, staurs and hall

Bevor George leaves his home Lehigh Station to join the President's advisors as a Colonel, he points out at a reception that Lieutenant Billy Hazard already stands at the front. George also puts the fate of Hazard Iron in Stanley's hands during his absence.

Stanley....................... (to a group of men) Now, my brother is close to Lincoln, and he feels, the president will mobilize this country as never before. And not just the military leadership, but the private sector as well. And that includes Hazard Iron. With George in Washington and me here at Lehigh Sation...

Maude........................ (to Isabel) Oh, Isabel, I hope we're are doing the right thing. There is a war on. A party like this might be in bad taste.

Isabel.......................... We're just celebrating the departure of our very own hero. After all, we're the most prominent family in this part of the state. People will see it as our patriotic duty.

Maude........................ Well, I'm not sure how happy George is with all this fanfare.

Stanley....................... (to his listeners) Most of the Army's best officers have already resigned and gone back south, which they'll regret. Because the Confederate cause may already be lost. But those of us who run important companies will create the engine that will power the Union to a quick victory. As a matter-of-fact, I have already drawn up plans-- (applause)

Constance.................. (appears with George at the stairs) I'm afraid you're going to have to be the Colonel.

George........................ Thank you very much, but... I haven't done anything yet to deserve this. I would like to think, that this is not only for those of us who are going off to war, but for those who had already left - including my younger brother, Lieutenant William Hazard - and especially for those who are staying here at home, working for the Union cause with the same dedication and spirit - including my eldest brother, Stanley, who'll be running Hazard Iron in my absence. (applause) Thank you very much. (walks up to Stanley) We have every confidence in you, Stanley.

Stanley....................... Thank you, George. You'll do a great job as always. Good luck to you.

George........................ Thank you.

Maude........................ All of this makes me know, you really are going to leave us. I'm going to miss you both so much.

Isabel.......................... Your guests are eager to meet you, Colonel Hazard.

George........................ Thank you, Isabel. Mother... (walks off)

Isabel.......................... (to Stanley) Don't let sentiment interfere with our plans, darling. Now isn't just a chance to profit from this foolish war, but for you to me the man you'd always wanted to be.

07.09 - Orry Arrives In Richmond

Start: 18.53, Length 3.35

Participants:

> Brigadier General Orry Main, CS

> Sekretär von Davis

> President Jefferson Davis, CS

> Brigadier General Robert E. Lee, CS

> Statists: cabinet members, CS officers, visitor in foreroom

Locatopn opening: Richmond, president's house, outside

Location scene: Richmond, Davis' foreroom and office

Orry closes up with President Davis' staff of advisors in Richmond, where he also meets Brigadier General Robert E. Lee. Lee points out that he sees secession and slavery as wrong and that he stands by the South only because he cannot take arms against his home state of Virginia.

Assistant................... General. President Davis is waiting. (lets Orry into the president's office)

Lee.............................. Mr. President, I appreciate your sentiments, but we simply cannot afford to temporize. The North will strangle the South, if we do. (3)

Orry............................. Excuse me, I was told to join you when I arrive.

Davis.......................... Indeed, Sir, indeed. Gentlemen, Brigadier General Orry Main. General Robert E. Lee, my military advisor. Members of my Cabinet. Our agents in the federal capital have shown us here (points to the map) how the North plans to crush us in the coils of a giant watersnake. (laughters) (4, 5)

Lee.............................. (serious) That is precisely the situation, Sir. All down the Eastern seaboard to the Florida Keys and then along the gulf to New Orleans, their navy would seal off the Confederacy. And they will send their western army south to secure the Border States.

Orry............................. ...and cut the Confederacy in two.

Davis.......................... Never. Never.

Orry............................. That would be daring, Mr. President. They could slowly sqeeze us to death by cutting off all our supplies and weappons from Texas and the ports of Mexico, and Europe.

Davis.......................... Scott, their general-in-chief and a Virginian, proposed this far-fetched strategy. The man is a traitor to the South. (6)

Lee.............................. To be a Southener and believe in the Union does not make one a traitor, Sir, or I would not be here. (7)

Davis.......................... I realize that you turned down Lincoln's offer to command the Yankee armies, General Lee. But I head no idea... (7)

Lee.............................. Mr. President, I believe, secession is unconstitutional, and slavery is a moral and political evil in any society. (7)

Davis.......................... Then why have you joined us?

Lee.............................. Because I could not draw my sword against Virginia. My loyalty and my affections and those of my family for five generations belong to her. That is why I'm here, Sir. Now, if we are to have any chance at all to defeat the North, we must enlist our own snake and strike like a cobra right at their vitals, the federal capital of Washington. (7)

Davis.......................... Sir, I do not agree with you. Many of our state militias would refuse to join an invasion of the North.

Lee.............................. Mr. President, if you allow the individual states to dictate our...

Davis.......................... Lincoln maneuvered us into the fire of the first shot at Fort Sumter. I'll not let him brand me the aggressor again. Next time, the North will be the first to fire. - Enough for today, Gentlemen. General Main... (all others leave) I'm sure, you must be wondering, why I summoned you here.

Orry............................. To be honest, Sir, yes.

Davis.......................... Your cotton mill in South Carolina was one of the first in the South and very successful.

Orry............................. We were showing an excellent profit, Sir. But now the mill is producing war material. So my partner George Hazard and I had to liquidate, since he's from Pennsylvania.

Davis.......................... That's another tragedy and all this, isn't it? The destruction of such old and dear friendships.

Orry............................. George and I hope to continue that friendship someday, Sir.

Davis.......................... Sir, my government desperately needs your expertise. I don't have to tell you how few factories we have in the South, and the shortage of raw materials.

Orry............................. I know, Sir, I know.

Davis.......................... That's why I need you. To make our war machine as efficient as possible.

Orry............................. I will do my best, Sir. You have my word.

Davis.......................... That's all, any of us can do.

 (3) Historical: Robert Edward Lee, 19.01.1807 - 12.10.1870, West Point class of 1829, Mexican-American War, West Point Superintendent, 1859 commanded unit against John Brown at Harper's Ferry, declined overall command on the Union army, May 1861 CS Brigadier General, Aug 1861 full General, military advisor to Jefferson Davis, 1865 General in Chief, aber the war president of a college (Wikipedia)

Long time needed to built and acquire ships for blue- and brown-water wars caused critics by patriots demanding quick action, newspaper depiction als a snake curling around the Southern coast and up the Mississippi gave the name "Anaconda Plan", realized only in parts (19.04.1861 blockade orderes by Lincoln, Mississippi Jul 1863 conquered)) (Wikipedia)

Hampton.................... The Union has a substantial force here beyong the Blue Ridge Mountain, sixty miles to the west of their capital. So we've have to pose eleven-thousand of our men to stop them from invading the Shenandoah Valley. Now the main Yankee army is massing here, outside Washington. (1)

Charles....................... Lookes like they'll try to drive through eastern Virginia.

Hampton.................... And that's probably where we'll have to fight. Captain Main, ride north of Centerville, see how big a force they have and if they appear to be ready to move south. Don't take risks trying to take a prisoner. I need information, not dead scouts. (2)

Charles....................... Yes, Sir. (salutes, turns off)

Hampton.................... Good luck, Captain. (salutes)

Ambrose.................... Now, that's just fine, Corporal.

Charles....................... A haircut?

Ambrose.................... A trim? Just because there's a war on doesn't mean we stop being gentlemen. Thank you, Corporal (hands him a coin)

Charles....................... Ambrose, you just never cease to amaze me.

Ambrose.................... Well, thank you, Charles.

Charles....................... Come on, I need a volunteer, and you're it. (walks off)

Augusta..................... Ah!... (thrown off) Ouch...

Charles....................... It's a woman...

Ambrose.................... Captain, we got enough trouble without borrowing more. (shooting)

Augusta..................... Took you long enough to decide to help me.

Charles....................... Well, you might at least say thank you.

Augusta..................... Just get me outta this mess. I got to get these medicines through to your troops.

Charles....................... That does it. You know, you could show to us a little more gratitude.

Augusta..................... Well, I'm sorry. Augusta Barclay, Captain.

Charles....................... Charles Main.

Ambrose.................... Ambrose Pell.

Augusta..................... Lieutenant, I am grateful, more than you know. I've been smuggeling quinine and morphine from Union hospitals in Washington, if they hadn't caught me...

Augusta..................... Oh, I ran into these officers on the road, and I must say I'm awful glad that I did. Captain Main, Lieutenant Pell, this is Washington and his son Boz.

Boz.............................. We'll see to your horses, Sir.

Charles....................... Ah, we'd best be on our way.

Augusta..................... Well, let me offer you some supper. It's the least I can do.

Charles....................... Thanks, but...

Ambrose.................... Ah, Ma'am, we'd be honored to accept your kind offer. (to Charles) Charles, a man has to eat, and I have a feeling that the lady's cooking is better than yours.

Charles....................... I'm not fighting for the South if that means keeping slavery. I'm fighting for the place where I live. That's why most of the men joined up. Sometimes I wonder if Mr. Davis understands that.

Augusta..................... Well, I think he does, deep down.

Charles....................... Like you?

Augusta..................... I don't believe in this war, Captain. Just trying what I can to make things a little easier for those who have to fight it.

Charles....................... Yes, ah, thank you for the fine meal, Ma'am. But we do have to leave. I wanna reach those Yankee encampments before morning.

Ambrose.................... Well, I'll get the horses. Excuse me, Ma'am. (walks out)

Charles....................... Does your husband object the work you're doing? It seems a bit dangerous.

Augusta..................... My husband died a few years ago. He was a good man, older than me. Learned a great deal from him.

Charles....................... Sounds like you really miss him.

Augusta..................... With all the work there is to do and my other activities, there's not much time to be lonely.

Charles....................... Thank you again for all your kindness, Mrs. Barclay.

Augusta..................... It's Augusta, Captain. (handkiss)

Charles....................... Good luck.

Augusta..................... Goodbye.

Charles....................... Take care of yourself, Washington.

Washington.............. Goodbye, Captain.

Ambrose.................... Thank you very much.

Augusta..................... Goodbye.

Charles....................... Goodbye, Boz. (mounts, they ride off)

Boz.............................. Captain. Lieutenant.

Charles....................... (admiring) That is some kinda lady.

Augusta..................... Good night. (walks inside)

Washington.............. Good night.

Script error: At this overall scene from meeting with Augusta until riding off again after supper, the times of day gets somehow mixed up. It is full dayloght when the two officers help Augusta out of her troubles. After Ambrose has midled the yankees, they meet again in the dark of night, only to arrive at her farm in bright daylight. They just stay for supper but leave again by night..

Virgilia applies at the federal hospital as a nurse, but Ms. Dix's assistant Mrs. Reilly declines her on grounds of having been in an assylum.

Mrs. Reilly................. Mrs. Grady? I am sorry to keep you waiting so long, but I had difficulty finding your letter of application.

Virgilia........................ I sent it when I first heard about the nursing corps. Well, I have many skills, and I can ashure you I can learn othery very quickly.

Mrs. Reilly................. Mrs. Grady, I'm afraid there is more to it than that.

Virgilia........................ I don't understand.

Mrs. Reilly................. Sit, please. Mary? (nurse leaves the office) We make it a point to find out as much as possible about the women who applied to us. Perhaps you've heard that Mrs. Dix is quite concerned that we don't attract... well, the wrong sort of woman. (1)

Virgilia........................ Are you saying that I'm the wrong sort of woman?

Mrs. Reilly................. Let me be direct, Mrs. Grady. We've learned that you spent three months in an asylum for the insane.

Virgilia........................ That was after my husband's death. That doesn't mean, I'm crazy.

Mrs. Reilly................. Nursing in wartime is difficult and dangerous work. There'll be hideous suffering and death. We can't sent a nurse who might break under the strain.

Virgilia........................ My husband was murdered at Harper's Ferry. Surely you can understand the grief of a woman. Even if others consider it madeness.

Mrs. Reilly................. There is also the matter of you abolitionist views. Some of your causes, we just...

Virgilia........................ Such as marrying a Negro? That  was not a cause, Mrs. Reilly. That was love.

Mrs. Reilly................. Your marriage has nothing to do with this. I'm sorry, but I must reject your letter of application.

Virgilia........................ Then I must inform you that I have highly placed friends in the government.

Mrs. Reilly................. I'm afraid, this isn't a matter of personal influence.

Virgilia........................ You and Mrs. Dix have not seen the last of me. I promise you that, Mrs. Reilly. (walks out)

At talking over this in a restaurant, they occasionally cross paths with George, Constance, Billy and Brett, and Virgilia reacts mostly frosty.

Brett............................ We were married in such a hurry, I never had time to get your ring engraved.

Billy............................. (reads) 'Forever'.

George........................ I think, that calls for a toast.

Constance.................. Yes. (takes her glass) To the Hazard's.

George........................ And the Main's.

Constance.................. And may God keep our families safe and bring us together when this is all through.

Billy............................. Hear, hear.

Greene........................ (appeares with Virgilia at the entrance) Isn't that your family at the far end?

Virgilia........................ Yes, it is. Could we please find our table?

Billy............................. (at the table) Who's she with?

George........................ Sam Greene. He's a congressman.

Brett............................ Constance, that dress, isn't it your Worth gown?

Constance.................. Yes, well, Virgilia liked it so much that I gave it to her.

Billy............................. Excuse me. (walks over, to Greene) That's alright, so don't get up. I just want to say goodbye to my sister. (to Virgilia) I leave in the morning, Virgilia. I may not see you until the war is over. I just wanna wish you all the best. (turns to leave) (1)

Virgilia........................ Billy, take care of yourself. (Billy turns off)

Greene........................ Well, at least one member of the Hazard family seems to care about you.

Virgilia........................ I prefer, not to discuss my family. We've more inportant things to discuss.

Greene........................ I have missed seeing you. Why did you wait so long to tell me you were in Washington?

Virgilia........................ Because I wasn't ready to see you, yet.

Greene........................ And now you are?

Virgilia........................ I need your help again, Sam. I want to be a nurse. It seems to be the only way a woman can fight this war. And I run into some difficulty that I didn't plan on.

Greene........................ Why? You're certainly charming enough. I can attest to that.

Virgilia........................ Dorothea Dix sets very high standards for her nursing corps. And charme doesn't seem to be a prerequisite.

Greene........................ I know that a number of women had been turned down, but...

Virgilia........................ I haven't even gotten past her aide, Sam. (waiter fills their glasses)

Greene........................ Why? (to the waiter) Thank you. (waiter turns off, to Virgilia) What's the problem?

Virgilia........................ Have you forgotten, that I was in an asylum?

Greene........................ Her aides found out about it? And you want me to talk to Miss Dix on your behalf?

Virgilia........................ Would you please, Sam?

Greene........................ Well...

Virgilia........................ Sam, your recommendation would override anything her staff might say. And you could explain to her...

Greene........................ My reward will be...?

Virgilia........................ My friedship and support, as always.

Greene........................ You never fail to amaze me. You could ask for the moon and not even offer a kiss in return.

Virgilia........................ So does this mean, you'll help me?

Greene........................ Yes.

(1) Director's error: When Billy rises from the table, Virginia (in the green dress) and Green enter the room in the background a second time, after had done that before - noticed by everyone on Billy's table - and have walked over to their table.

Participants:

> Colonel George Hazard, US

> Virgilia Hazard

Location: Washington, accit chamber

When George later visits Virgilia in her attic chamber and talks about unity inside the family, Virgilia rejects him.

Virgilia........................ (opens the door) Why, George, what a surprise.

George........................ I doubt that, since you saw me earlier this evening.

Virgilia........................ Was that you? You know, I did see a man in uniform, that looked a lot like you. And I thought, 'No, George would never take up arms agains his beloved Southern friends.'

George........................ You haven't changed, have you, Virgilia?

Virgilia........................ A constant in this time of change. Why are you here, George? Did your wife send you?

George........................ What are you doing in Washington?

Virgilia........................ Do you really care? I want Sam Greene to help me getting into the nursing corps.

George........................ Why didn't you see me first?

Virgilia........................ Oh, George, don't patronize me.

George........................ I'm not. I've been concerned about you.

Virgilia........................ Well, I'm fine.

George........................ At least let me loan you some money, so you can find you a decent place to live.

Virgilia........................ You might have shown such brotherly concern when Grady was alive.

George........................ I'm sorry your husband was killed, but there is nobody in our family to blame for that.

Virgilia........................ We're not a family, George, we never have been.

George........................ We were close when we were younger. I'm not sure how or why that changed.

Virgilia........................ When I began to think for myself, which is something women aren't supposed to do. You know, it amazed me, everyone was listening to Stanley's most rediculous ideas, but no-one ever cared to hear what I might think. Do you know, how that feals, George? To spend your whole life becoming educated and formed, only to be overlooked because you don't happen to be a male.

George........................ I have always been interested about what you had to say, Virgilia. But the only oppinion you ever wanted to hear was your own.

Virgilia........................ Oh, George! You, of all people, should have seen what I was trying to do. No, you dismissed me like the rest. 'An abolitionist fanatic.' You moderates still don't hear the drums. You say, all you want to do is preserve the Union, that slavery isn't the issue. And I say, it's the only issue, George.

George........................ I despise slavery as much as you do, but I'm not here to argue right or wrong or anything else. I am here, because you are my sister, I care about you, and I wanna let you know that your family is there if you ever need them. Is that so difficult to understand?

Virgilia........................ Is this so hard for you to understand that I just wanna be alone.

George........................ Virgilia, we can't change what is past. But we can make a new beginning.

Virgilia........................ No. It was too late for that a long time ago, George.

George........................ Virgilia...

Virgilia........................ If you'll excuse me, George, I'd like to turn in. Give my regards to Constance.

George........................ If you ever need me, you know how to find me. (leaves)

In Richgmond, Jefferson Davis holds a reception with dance, with James and Ashton Huntoon attending also. When they arrive, Ashton points out the importance of this invitation for James' carreer chances.

Ashton....................... Now, don't hang too close to me tonight, James. You'll meet more people if you don't monopolize my time.

James.......................... You seem to have damn little of that for me, in public or private.

Ashton....................... It's for your own good, James. A loyal wife always helpes her husband's career. And tonight is the perfect opportunity. Imagine, you and me at a party given by Jefferson Davis.

James.......................... Davis is bound to recognize my vision and courage, and realize he needs me in the war effort.

Ashton....................... Flattery, James. All men like flattery. Use whatever charme you can muster.

James.......................... I wish you'd stop treating me like a child. My views are my strength.

Ashton....................... Being a clerk to the first assistant in the treasury? It's not good enough for you, James. I want more for you, much more.

James.......................... For me, or for yourself?

Ashton....................... Isn't it all one and the same?

Start 43.35, Length 5.09

Participants:

> President Jefferson Davis, CS

> Ashton Huntoon

> Elkanah Bent (in civilian clothings)

> Nebenrolle: friend of James

> Statists: dancers, guests, servants

Location scene: Richmond, Stockwood Hotel, ballroom

James and Davis get into a heated discussion on the question of states' rights versus a central government until Davis terminates the talk. Ashton scolds James for his stubbornness. Then, Elkanah Bent appears and offers James a share at his blockaderunner ships, but fails on James' high moral standards. Again, Ashton intercepts and gets to know Bent for the first time.

Davis.......................... Mr. Huntoon, in time of war a central government must enforce the stern measures necessary to our military operation, such as the use of slavery as laborers, regardless of it's unpopularity.

James.......................... Then I submit, with all due respect to yourself and to your office, that it must not happen. Only the souvereign states can decide policy. If they are forced to surrender that freedom to a central power, why, we'd be no better all than that circus in Washington.

Davis.......................... May I remind you, Sir, that I am charged with making this new nation strong and successful. We must have a central government stronger than it's separate parts. Other... (1)

James.......................... Never. The states will not tolerate that.

Davis.......................... If that be so, Mr. Huntoon, then the Confederacy will not last out the year. You can have separate independent states of you can have a strong new nation. But you cannot have both. A choice must be made.

James.......................... It is my choice, not to be party ever to authocrathic ways! Furthermore...

Davis.......................... If you excuse me, Mr. Huntoon. (turns off)

Listener...................... Well done, James. Why, he's afraid to argue political philosophy because he knows he's wrong. (turns off)

Ashton....................... (appears, upset) James.

James.......................... Ashton.

Ashton....................... Don't 'Ashton' me, I heard everything. Is that what flattery means to, James? Being in argument with the most important man in government.

James.......................... He behaves like a dictator. And I have a strong conviction...

Ashton....................... Go to hell with your conviction. You probably ended your political career just now. Well, that is, you ever really had one. (walks over) Glass of Champagne, please. (half way to Bent) I simply can't abide punch that's lost it's potency.

Bent............................ (smiles, walks over to James) Good evening, Mr. Huntoon.

James.......................... Good evening, Sir. I'm afraid, you have the advantage. Have we met before?

Bent............................ Well, I'm not surprised you don't remember me. The last time I saw you, I was wearing the uniform of a major in the Union army.

James.......................... In New Orleans, after one of my speaches.

Bent............................ Precisely. After which several of us adjourned to Madame Conti's house where we enjoyed the favours of certain ladies.

James.......................... Yes, yes, of course. You told me, that you cannot serve the Union. But if Jeff Davis were elected, you'd cannot serve him either.

Bent............................ As you can see I'm still a man of my word. And you, Sir, are still a man of vision.

James.......................... Thank you, I appreciate you're gracious.

Bent............................ Not at all. I overheard your discussion with that arrogant jackass. You're completely justified in what you said to him.

James.......................... I'm afraid my wife doesn't share your opinion.

Bent............................ Well, she certainly is beautiful, which probably means you'll have to forgive her.

James.......................... Come then, let me introduce you to her.

Bent............................ Well, I'd love to, Sir. But bussiness before the pleasure of meeting your wife. If you will... (leads the way) I confess I have a particular reason for wishing to renew your acquaintance. To come to the point, Mr. Huntoon, I'm organizing a small group of men - men of vision and stature like yourself - to finance a confidential venture that I guarantee will provide incredible profit.

James.......................... You mean, some kind of investment?

Bent............................ A maritime investment, Sir. You see, I think, the Yankee blockade provides a golden opportunity for men of the will and wherewithal.

James.......................... Are you suggesting running the blockade?

Bent............................ Yes, I am. I already have an interest in one ship, and I have just located a very fast steamer, called the 'Water Witch'. Now, she can be refitted in Liverpool to suite our purposes at a fair price. Your share of the profit will be equal to your share of the investment.

James.......................... The Confederacy will need more arms and emunition.

Bent............................ Sir, I'm referring to luxuries. Luxuries are where the money is. Of course, the danger to the ship is tremendous. So what we are looking for is the short term, Mr. Huntoon, not the long term. But with the right cargo, only two successful runs will bring in a profit of five-hundred percent. After that, let the Yankees sink her, if they can. And if not, our potential earnings are astronomical.

James.......................... I must decline, Sir. I want no part of such a scheme.

Bent............................ May I ask why, Sir.

James.......................... I have several reasons, but one is enough. It is unpatriotic.

Bent............................ Since when are perfume, silk and good sherry unpatriotic?

James.......................... My answer is 'no', Sir.

Ashton....................... (appears) 'No' to what?

Bent............................ Your husband and I were disagreeing on a bussiness venture, although we do share the same politics, and evidently the same love of beauty.

Ashton....................... My dear, may I present...

Bent............................ (to James) Elkanah Bent, Sir. (to Ashton) At your service. (handkiss)

James.......................... Mr. Bent, my wife Ashton.

(1) Historical: The conflict shown here between the interrests of the individual states versus the necessity of a central leadership in times of war was historically one of the weak points for the inner stability of the Confederacy.

Ashton....................... (dancing with Bent) You went to the wrong person, Mr. Bent. My husband would never invest in something like that.

Bent............................ Because of his patriotism?

Ashton....................... (laughes) No. Because he's a coward. But I'm not. And I have my own money.

Bent............................ Now, how can that be, Madam? Your husband is a lawer. And the law says that your money became his the moment you were married.

Ashton....................... I control my money, Mr. Bent, because I control my husband.

Bent............................ Well, I can believe that.

Ashton....................... And I think he was very wrong to refuse you.

Bent............................ Does that mean that you would not.

Ashton....................... (dance ends) Perhaps we should discuss it later. In private. (walks off)

Burnett....................... Permission to speak, Sir.

Justin.......................... What is it, soldier?

Burnett....................... (steps forward, salutes) Well, Sir, I wanna be released from my enlistment. It's my wife, Sir, she misses me. And my young'uns. Sir, I gotta be honest with you, I'm just not cut out for this militia life. Well, I can shoot rabbits and possum, but I sure don't think I'd pull the trigger on no human being, not even a Yank.

Justin.......................... What's your name, soldier?

Burnett....................... Burnett, Sir.

Justin.......................... Well, Private Burnett, what do you think would happen to our Confederacy if every man decided that he was not 'cut out for this militia life'? Ours is a glorious cause, young men. Freedom, independence, the supremacy of the white man. Everyone of us must be willing to give his last breath to that end. Your request is denied, soldier.

Bernett........................ But Sir...

Ashton....................... (Bent answers the door) Where were you, Mr. Bent? I don't like to be kept waiting. I've already risked my reputation enough by coming here without my husband's knowledge.

Bent............................ I must say, you do look ravishing, Mrs. Huntoon.

Ashton....................... If you intend on flattering me, Sir, you'll have to do much better than that.

Bent............................ May I offer you something to drink?

Ashton....................... Champagne would do nicely, thank you.

Bent............................ Well, our tastes are similar. Surely that must mean something.

Ashton....................... You presume too much, Sir, on such an early acquaintance.

Bent............................ Perhaps I do presume. I have been expecting you for days.

Ashton....................... (fetches a bank draft) Money like this doen't grow on trees, you know. Besides, let me decide whether I trust you.

Bent............................ Maybe I should tell you that when I renewed my acquaintance with your husband, I had a much a deeper motive.

Ashton....................... And that was?

Bent............................ You and I.

Ashton....................... You never laid eyes on me until four days ago.

Bent............................ Well, I have seen your image, the one he carries with him in his wallet.

Ashton....................... My wedding picture?

Bent............................ The one where your brother is standing there...

Ashton....................... Orry? I don't wanna hear about Orry. -- How do you know my brother?

Bent............................ We were cadets together.

Ashton....................... At West Point. Well, he's talked about you since I was a little girl. 'Bent the bastard' is the term I most remember.

Bent............................ Your brother and his friend George Hazard were my enemies at the Point. They conspired to have me discharged from the academy.

Ashton....................... I wouldn't be surprised at anything those two might do.

Bent............................ Well, then you know George Hazard, too.

Ashton....................... His younger brother married my sister. I hate all the Hazard's, including her.

Bent............................ Evidently, your hatred extends all the way to your own brother.

Ashton....................... Orry actually ordered me off the plantation, all because I just tried to... interfere with my sister's marriage to that damn Yankee. You saw my wedding picture?

Bent............................ Once. After one of your husband's speeches.

Ashton....................... My sister Brett was that drab little thing to my right.

Bent............................ I don't recall it all that well, except for you, of course. And there was some other woman with dark hair. You have another sister?

Ashton....................... No. That was Madeline LaMotte, the whore. She's living with my brother now.

Bent............................ Illicitly.

Ashton....................... And openly. He claims, he's giving her sanctuary from her crazy husband. But from what I hear, they plan on getting married, what that is as soon as she is getting her divorce.

Bent............................ Better and better.

Ashton....................... Why, don't tell me that you know her.

Bent............................ Let's just say, I know something about her, that I'll keep to myself for a while yet. Now, I would appriciate it, if you gave me that bank draft. (pulls her near)

Ashton....................... How masterful, a man who takes what he wants.

Bent............................ And he wants it all.

Ashton....................... My my my, Mr. Bent. You are greedy for all the good things in life. After all, money is but one.

Bent............................ It's the one that buys all the rest. (kiss) --

Ashton....................... I'm not that easily bought, Sir. You must show me profits before you deserve what you'd just stolen.

Bent............................ You'll have your profits. And you'll have more. Much more.

Ashton....................... I must run. James expects me home, when he returns from the treasury. Send your card around, Sir, when your ship comes in. (leaves)

Bent............................ (takes a long look at the portrait of Madeline's mother) (4)

Billy............................. William Hazard. Friends call me Billy.

Kent............................ Well, I can see you're gonna keep us constantly entertained, Hazard. First you get your foot stuck in your mouth and then you try to palm off some kid as a drummer boy.

Billy............................. I think he can do the job.

Kent............................ He'll run at the sound of the first canon.

Tom............................. Billy! Billy! (runs along) Colonel said, he put me on the muster roll. I made it.

Billy............................. Gratulations.

George........................ General Beauregard has been bringing his rebel troops to the railroad junction here, (points on the map) at Manassas, near Bull Run.

Cameron..................... They're obviously massing for a major movement north, against the capital. (1)

US General................. I don't think so, Sir. They'll wait to see what we intend.

Lincoln....................... While we wait to see what they intend.

George........................ Isn't it possible, Mr. President, that the blockade you ordered of all their ports will bring them to the senses before anymore blood need to be spilled?

Lincoln....................... The Southern hotheads hoot at my blockade as loudly as they question my ancestry. We cannot expect a blockade to bring'em down.

Cameron..................... There are certain domestic political considerations as well. Our people believe, it's high time to whip the rebels and end all this nonsense. That traitor Davis has proclaimed their cause the second American revolution.

Lincoln....................... What he is talking about, Mr. Cameron, is the right to revolt.

Cameron..................... We'll crush them with the weight of our numbers, and be in Richmond by August.

Lincoln....................... Numbers alone won't be enough. This will be a people's war, brother against brother, our greatest test. Those boys moving south deserve the best arms and canon we can give them.

George........................ I had just turned my emunition report to your secretary, Mr. President. Our people will work day and night to get them what they need.

Cameron..................... Not that so-called Spencer repeating rifle, Colonel? Think of the bullets it'd waste. Stick to the tried and true in battle. You can't go wrong.

Lincoln....................... Noted. - Gentlemen, General McDowell had a full meal last night, then polished off a whole watermelon for desert. If he can polish off Beauregard with as much relish, we have nothing to fear. (laughters)

Location: Battlefield at Manassas, VA

July 21st, 1861: Along Bull Run Creek near Manassas, VA, both armies meet for their first battle. Many families form a picknick nearby to view the action, since the North is convinced of a quick and relatively bloodless victory and those civilians don't want to miss the "show". General Harper is on location as a military observer, with Colonel George Hazard as his adjutant as well as both their wifes. The battle is cruel and leads to a chaoric retreat of the beaten Yankees. When a paramedic soldiers asks for doctors among the viewers, they turn to hurry back to Washington as well. They all collide at the bottleneck of a bridge, where panic ensues when grenades come in. With General Harper not grasping the situation fully, George uses the carriage to take some wounded soldiers to safety.

George........................ You'd think, this was some sort of  picnic. General, we have been rushed into this battle by the public. The South holds strong defensive positions on their own soil.

Harper......................... The rebels have already retreated to Henry House Hill. (1, 2)

George........................ My old classmate Tom Jackson's holding that hill. I would expect there to be formidable Confederate opposition.

Harper......................... Nonsense, Colonel. Undisciplined rabble cannot stand against a great nation's army.

George........................ That's what King George said in 1776.

Mrs. Harper............... Gentlemen, please cease fire. You you can see why I insisted of we come along, too. Somebody has to keep the piece.

Constance.................. Now that's an odd expression to use on a battlefield.

Molly.......................... (appears) General! Mrs. Harper! Isn't it exciting?

Mrs. Harper............... Molly! I didn't think you were coming.

Molly.......................... I made Mama change her mind. She's setting up our picnic. Before I eat I got to get a good look. I've never seen a battle before.

(fighting begins, canon fire)

Tom............................. (in the field) Don't worry, I'll keep up.

Billy............................. I know, you're the last one I'm worried about, Tom. General wants us to move closer to that Confederate battery.

Kent............................ Don't interrupt an artist at work, Hazard. I just dropped a Reb artillery captain.

Mrs. Harper............... (with the spectators) Why is Colonel Hazard so concerned?

Constance.................. His younger brother is in the sharpshooters.

Billy............................. (in the field) Company - prepare for advance! Advance while firing!

Mrs. Harper............... (with the spectators) I still can't see a thing with all the smoke and the trees and the hills.

Billy............................. (in the field) Company - halt!

Beauregard................ (at the confederate headquaters) There's their destination, Sir.

CS Adjutant............... (to Beauregard) Henry House.

Charles....................... (rides up with Ambrose, to an officer) Wade Hampton's Legion?

CS Officer................... Ah, to the right, Sir, the Hodam's branch.

Charles....................... Let's show them how to whistle Dixie. (they ride off)

CS Soldiers................ (in the field) Draw - sabers! (formation rides off)

Billy............................. (to Tom) I'll send you back with a message for the Colonel.

Tom............................. Ain't leaving you, Lieutenant, or my post, no matter what happens. We're a team.

Billy............................. Yes, Sir.

Ambrose.................... (outside the field) That's not our legion.

Charles....................... Doesn't matter. It's our war now. Come on! (they ride off)

Billy............................. (in the field) Company - advance! (they walk on) Beat a ralley, Tom! Loud as you can, loud! Come on! Rally! Step forward! Ready - aim - fire!

US Soldier.................. (with the spectators, rides up) We need doctors! Are there any doctors here? We need you. Take any horses you can find and follow me.

Harper......................... Private! What is happening?

US Soldier.................. (salutes) With all the respect, Sir, all hell is breaking loose down there. The wounded are coming in faster than we can take them. We're trying to load them on the wagons and run for home.

Harper......................... Run? From the damn rebels?

US Soldier.................. We have no choice, Sir. They're whipping us.

George........................ How bad is it?

US Soldier.................. It's over, Sir. We can't hold'em anywhere. I suggest, you get the women and children outta here, before they block the road. (rides off)

Harper......................... You salute to a superiour officer before you take your own leave! Private!

George........................ General, we have to go now, before they jam up the road. Corporal, quickly! (fleed begins)

Billy............................. (in the field) Fall back!

George........................ (with the spectators, driver jumps off) Corporal! Come back here! Corporal! Constance, grab the reins. (takes a wounded soldier in the carriage)

Harper......................... What are you doing? You can't put him in here.

George........................ Move over!
