09.02 - Discussions On Morals And
Money
Isabel and Maude Hazard
disagree on weather to show one's wealth in times like these. Then, Isabel
wipes out Stanley's doubts on their fake company "Axol Iron".

A Southern victory appears imminent and Lincoln's only hope now, is to make slavery
an issue.
Stanley.......................
Excellent as usual, Mother. The roast beef was done to perfection.
Maude........................
Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it. At least one of my boys has enough to eat. And
with the Confederate army practically at our back door it will be the last we
will get for a while. (1)
Isabel..........................
Mother, there's nothing to worry about. Our army is bigger than theirs and
we'll drive the rebels right into the Potomac.
I hear their ragtag army's practically starving, anyhow, which is just what
they deserve.
Maude........................
Isabel, please. Try to remember that your brother-in-law is married to a
Southern girl and that she is part of this family.
Isabel..........................
Of course, Mother. I don't know why we're talking about the war, anyway. I
wanted to discuss the ball with you.
Maude........................
I thought, it was to be a reception, Isabel. A dress ball would be in very poor
taste during times like these.
Isabel..........................
Mother, Hazard Iron is doing better than ever before. Money is pouring in. Why
shouldn't we entertain our friends and business associates?
Maude........................
All these new friends and associates of yours, they are people we know nothing
about, except that they seem to be making a great deal of money.
Isabel..........................
Business is thriving because of the war, Mother. Everyone knows that. Stanley
and I have done business with them, some of whom are quite influencial in New York and Washington.
Maude........................
Where money makes all the difference. Now, it will be a modest reception or it
will not be held at all.
Isabel..........................
Very well, I can still wear my emeralds.
Maude........................
I don't mean to keep harping on this, but it was very, very extravagant of Stanley, to buy those for
you.
Isabel..........................
It was Stanley's
way of saying thank you for all the advice that I have given him in business
matters. Because of me, Hazard Iron has more orders than it's ever had. Isn't
that right, my darling?
Stanley.......................
---
Maude........................
(rises) Well, if you'll excuse me, I have some committee reports to read.
(walks off)
Stanley.......................
The War Department has began to procecute those making excessive profits. If
there is an investigation...
Isabel..........................
There will be no investigation of Hazard Iron. We have nothing to worry about.
Stanley.......................
How can you say that? We sold inferiour canons to the army.
Isabel..........................
Axol Iron sold those canons.
Stanley.......................
If the war contract with Axol is ever connected to Hazard Iron, everybody knows
that I'm been running that company.
Isabel..........................
Before the war you had to have George's approval on every decision. Most people
will asume, that's still true. And to make sure, I took out some insurance for
us.
Stanley.......................
Insurance? I don't understand.
Isabel..........................
I forged George's name on all the contracts to make it appear as though he
signed them before he left for the army.
Stanley.......................
That makes him legally responsible.
Isabel..........................
Exactly. So, IF the government investigates, which they won't, (kiss) they'll
procecute George instead of us. (kiss) Haven't I been right about everything
else? (kiss)
(1) Historica error: Maude referrs toe the first Northern invasion attempt by General
Robert E. Lee that ended at Sharpsburg resp. Antietam Creek, MD, on Sept 17,
1862. 10 months after that at Gettysburg, Lee was way farther to the North and
by that in the same State as "Lehigh Station". Isabel's remark on the
conditions of Confederate troops also matches a later time.

09.03 - Antietam Creek, MD

(battle)
Ambrose....................
Damn Yankees have learned how to fight.
Charles.......................
Looks like our boys could use a hand, Ambrose. Forward! (troop storms forward)
No, not here, men! Stop them!

Charles.......................
Hold the line!

Charles.......................
I came to say goodbye, Ambrose. This wasn't a day for heroes, pal.

09.05 - Lincoln Looks For A Good
General
President
Lincoln is worried over suffering more Northern than Southern among the 25,000
casualties fro the battle. General Lee has shown his ability once again to
safely return back to Virginia, and U.S. General McClellan nethertheless calls
it a "master piece". George recommends his West Point acquaintance
Ulyssus Samuel Grant as potential new General in Chief.

Lincoln.......................
The bloodiest day of the war. Nearly twenty-five-thousand killed, wounded or
missing at Antietam Creek. And more than half of them ours.
George........................
I wouldn't thought it possible, Mr. President.
Lincoln.......................
That we could slaughter each other on such a scale? Dear God, the poor families
of the dead. McClellan calles it a masterpiece.
George........................
At least Lee has pulled out and is retreating back to Virginia.
Lincoln.......................
I promised myself that as soon as we drove them out of Maryland I'd call it a victory and issue the
proclamation.
George........................
To free the slaves in the South.
Lincoln.......................
It's always been the right thing to do. But, George, I still need a
hell-for-leather general. We can't go on this way, savaging each other to make
more widows and orphans. Your report makes Ulyssus Grant sound likely.
George........................
Yes, Sir. I know him well. He was two years ahead of me at West
Point.
Lincoln.......................
He told Buckner at Fort
Donelson that he'd accept
no terms but unconditional surrender. When I heard that, I knew I had found a
man I could talk to.
George........................
There will be opposition to him, if you choose him, Sir.
Lincoln.......................
Because he drinks? (2)
George........................
I don't believe it. But he was rumored to have been drunk at Shiloh.
Lincoln.......................
And he carried the day.
George (nods)
Lincoln.......................
George, I'm gonna watch him. Grant may be the commander I need. A man who can exploit
the Confederacy's weaknesses and force them to the wall. There's a whole way of
life at stake here. If it's God's will that we prevail, we won't just win a
war, we'll secure freedom for all our people.
(2) Historical: There really as been allegations, but never a proof,
that Grant was a drinker. When Grant left the army in 1854 with no reason
stated, a rumor was out for a long time that he was forced to do so because he
was found drunk on duty as a paymaster by his commanding officer. At the beginning
of the Civil War, he was subordinate to Major General Henry W. Halleck who also
saw him to be a drinker und therefor assigned him to inferior commands.

09.06 - At Grant's Headquarters
Lincoln sends out George to Grant to
offer him overall command. On his request, Grant offers him a field command.

George........................ General Grant.
Grant........................... They tell me, you're
from Washington, Colonel. I'm tired of them hounding me. If I see fit to keep
my soldiers warm by issuing two pairs of long-johns, that is nobody's business
but mine or theres. (2)
George........................ Yes, Sir. I'm not from
the inspector general's office. President Lincoln asked that I speak to you
privately, Sir.
Grant........................... The president sent
you, hm?
George........................ Yes, Sir.
Grant........................... What's your name?
George........................ Hazard. George Hazard.
Grant........................... Sit down.
George........................ (sits) Thank you, Sir.
Grant .......................... Don't I know you,
Colonel?
George........................ Yes, Sir. We go back
to West Point, I was in my second year when you graduated.
Grant........................... Of course, I
remember now. You had a darn fine record at the point.
George........................ Thank you, Sir.
Grant........................... A lot of fine
officers came out of that class. It's a shame, we're fighting each other now.
Not all of us will live to see the end if it, either.
George........................ That's why I'm here,
Sir. The president thinks that you're the man to end the war sooner - by
winning it.
Grant........................... Needs an admiral,
not a general. Only our control of the Mississippi will shorten this war by
cutting the enemy off from the West.
George........................ He doesn't want an
admiral, Sir. He want's a general like Robert E. Lee.
Grant........................... I don't blame him.
Lee's the best soldier on either side. I often wonder, if he remembers me from
Mexico.
George........................ Well, I'm sure, he
knows your name now, Sir.
Grant........................... Ah... - (takes the
tin bottle) Excuse me, Colonel, I forgot to offer you some of this. (George
hesitates) Go ahead.
George........................ Thank you, Sir.
(drinks, laughes) Apple cider, Sir?
Grant........................... You know, I'm not
near the drinker some people would like to believe.
George........................ Well, maybe you should
know, that those rumors have reached the ear of the president. He replied that
he'd like to know what kind of whiskey you drank, so he could buy some for his
other generals.
Grant........................... (laughes) He said
that, did he?
George........................ Yes, Sir.
Grant........................... Tell the
president... (they rise) You tell him that if he so chooses, I'll fight Lee for
him. Can't promise him an easy victory, but I'll fight him.
George........................ I'm sure, he'll be
glad to hear that, Sir. - General Grant, if you do take over, I have been
wanting a field command for a long time, Sir. I would be honored to serve under
you.
Grant........................... Well, I'd be honored
to have you, Colonel.
George........................ Thank you, Sir.
(2) Historisch: Ulysses Simpson "Sam"
Grant, 27.04.1822 - 23.07.1885, West Point class of 1843, Mexican American
War, 1854 resigned after aledged drinking problems, differend jobs, 1860

09.07 - The Emancipation Proclamation
Präsident Abraham Lincoln verkündet
die Prokalamation zur Freiheit aller Sklaven in den Rebellenstaaten, die am 1.
Januar inkraft treten soll.

Lincoln....................... (reads) '...that on
the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part
of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United
States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive
Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority
thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons. And I hereby
enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence,
unless in necessary self-defence; and I recommend to them that, in all cases
when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages. And upon this act,
sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon
military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind, and the
gracious favor of Almighty God.' (1)

09.09 - Salem Jones Appears At Mont Royal
Former
overseer Salem Jones unexpectedly appears with a dead young black at Mont Royal
and claims to see Lincoln as a fool and to have the right to shoot that slave
on his run. The solely present women Clarissa, Madeline and Brett chase Salem
off again, but Semiramis is very upset because the dead boy has been dear to
her.

Jones.......................... (rides up) Good
Morning, Miss Brett. Been a long while. But you might be needing your old overseer
in these troubled times. Congratulations, Mrs. Main. I understand you married
the General.
Madeline.................... What have you done?
Brett............................ Dear God, it's Jim!
You killed him.
Jones.......................... Well, I run him to
earth. He tried to grab my gun when I was bringing him back to you. So I had to
shoot him.
Madeline.................... How could you? He was
just a boy.
Jones.......................... Bullet's got a mind
of it's own, Ma'am. Maybe what happened is all for the best.
Clarissa....................... (appears) You're not
welcome here. My son Orry wanted no part of you, nor do we.
Jones.......................... You may change your
tune, Miss Clarissa, when you realize how much you'll gonna be needing me. A
few slaves around Charleston run away when there grapevine told them 'bout that
devil Lincoln's proclamation. Let them see what we still do to fugitives in the
South. Now all I ask is a small interest in this plantation, and you won't have
to worry about runaways, I can promise you. I can get more work out of these
slaves...
Brett............................ Appearently, you
didn't hear my mother. Get off our land.
Semiramis................... (appears) Oh my God.
Jim! You murderer! You murderer!
Ezra............................. (restrains her) No!
I won't let you get yourself killed.
Brett............................ You get outta here
before I take my own gun to you.
Jones.......................... You'd side with an
uppity wench?
Semiramis................... Life off you!
Jones.......................... Another year in this war,
and you Mains may not be so high and mighty. Lots of changes are gonna be made
around here. (rides out)

09.10 - Discussions About To Free The Slaves
The women agree to not hold any
blacks at Mont Royal against their will but to hand them out papers if they ask
for it, even if that means that the hard labor has to be done by themselves
then.

Brett............................ Jim was like
Semiramis' younger brother. She cared about him so much.
Madeline.................... The other slave owners
have nothing but scorn for Mr. Lincoln's proclamation. They say, he has no
authoritiy here. But if another Jim wants his freedom... we can't stop
him.
Brett............................ We have to keep
this plantation going. It's all we have.
Clarissa....................... I don't wanna see
such a dreadful thing ever happen again.
Madeline.................... If they decide to leave,
then the only hope we have to protect them is to give them passes and let them
go.
Clarissa....................... That poor boy. I can't
believe what's happening.
Brett............................ Mama, I think,
Madeline and I should pay our respects to Jim's family.

09.11 - Madeline And Brett Condoling
Madeline and Brett visit the dead
boy's family at the slave cabins and offer their condolences. They also
announce that nobody is kept at Mont Royal by force and that all can ask for
papers.

Sklave......................... Help them make it
through this time.
Joseph........................ Miss Brett, Miss
Madeline. Y'all come in, please.
Brett............................ (they enter the
cabin) We wanted to pay our respect to James' family.
Madeline.................... We are deeply sorry,
Liza. We know what a comfort and joy he was to you. If there's anything we can
do...
Eliza............................. Pray for him.
Brett............................ We will. And we
thought you ought to know, that we want you to stay with us because we need
you. But if anyone wants to leave us, please come to us, tell us. And we can
give you papers that might stop another Salem Jones from doing what he did to
our James. That's all we wanted to say. (they leave)

long to stay here / steal away / steal away / steal away to Jesus / steal away
/ steal away / I got long to stay here)

09.12 - Cuffey Thinks On Running
Slave Cuffey has developed a hatred
on all whites and tries to convince Semiramis to run off together with him.
Ezra intercepts and saves Semiramis from Cuffey's intrusiveness.

Cuffey......................... You think what I think?
If those black psalm singers in there had blood half as hot as mine, we could
march right on up to that old house and make it our own. But they ain't. They
gone go right on 'yes, Massa', 'no, Massa'. Till the day they's laid out on
that table like that damn fool boy in there.
Semiramis................... He wasn't no fool. He
had a dream.
Cuffey......................... He was a fool. A fool
that learned a few words in the Bible and thought he can go to freedom armed
with the Lord's might. (pulls a knife) This is the only might that the white
man understands. Cold steel. You ready to go with me, gal? We take a little
midnight walk. Join our kind over the Union base at Hilton Head.
Semiramis................... I ain't gonna walk with
you.
Cuffey......................... Don't you hear a word
I'm saying to you, gal? I'm offering you freedom if you come with me.
Semiramis................... I ain't gonna...
Ezra............................. (appears) Cuffey!
Cuffey......................... Some people don't
know when they ain't wanted. Why don't you just march yourself right outta
here?
Semiramis................... Don't go, Ezra.
Cuffey......................... (threatening) You
want something, boy?
Semiramis................... No! Ain't there been
enough killing? Cuffey, I wouldn't walk with you if heaven was waiting over the
next hill.
Cuffey......................... You stay then. Keep
waiting for your white rooster Charles, who's off fighting to keep me and you
slaves. Maybe he'll let you sleep in his bed. Ain't nothing left here for me,
except maybe pay for all the pain, sweat and blood these folks done took from
me. (walks off)
Semiramis................... I's glad you come out,
Ezra.
Ezra............................. I see him follow
you.
Semiramis................... I don't know how I'm
gonna go back in that house tonight. Maybe I just ought to light out.
Ezra............................. Been thinking about
that myself. Only trouble is, I wanna share that new life with someone.
Semiramis................... Ezra...
Ezra............................. You was so close to
freedom when you was in Washington. Why you come back?
Semiramis................... I got the note about
Miss Clarissa.
Ezra............................. Or is it what
Cuffey say? Way you feel 'bout Mr. Charles?
Semiramis................... I just come back 'cause
I come back, that's all. And I'm gonna stay, a now.
Ezra............................. That it, ain't it?
Mr. Charles. I wouldn't have thought you'd even be able to think of a white man
after Salem Jones.
Semiramis................... Don't ever say that man
name to me again. Now I just wanna be alone.
Ezra............................. I sorry, Semi. I just... I don't want you to hurt no more. That all.

In the Shenandoah Valley, Orry
organizes much needed supplies, when the supply unit gets ambushed by some of
Yankee general Hooker's men. By watchfullness of Major Dupree, the yankees can
successfully been chased off.

Orry............................. General Lee has a
lot of hungry soldiers to feed, and those Shenandoah farmers sure do their
part. I can see why they call this 'The Bredbasket of the Confederacy'. Major
Dupree, you're to be commended on the way you kept these supply trains on
schedule.
Dupree........................ Well, it's all your
blueprint, General. All we had to do is carry it out.
Orry............................. Well, I best get
back it the saddle if I'm to make it to Tennessee by late tomorrow. Once again,
thank you for your dedication.
Dupree........................ Thank you, Sir. Now,
we all appreciate what you're doing for the whole army, General Main. Have a
safe journey now. (salutes, to his attendants) Gentlemen. (Orry rides off,
Yankee attack) Federals! Take line formation! (fight)
Orry............................. (turns, joins in
the fight)
Yankee........................ Fall back!
Yankee........................ Retreat! Retreat!
Retreat
Dupree........................ Sergeant, see to the
wounded!
Orry............................. Take it, those are
Hooker's men? (2)
Dupree........................ Yes, Sir. They've been
laying low for us all over this part of Virginia. Sure glad you came back,
General. We'll be loosing the light in about an hour. Why don't you and your aids
stay the night with us.

In the
subsequent conversation, both officers talk about their wifes the miss very
much, and Orry takes a letter to deliver it to Brenda Dupree in Tennessee.

Dupree........................ You a married man,
General?
Orry............................. Yes. Recently, as a
matter-of-fact.
Dupree........................ Well, congratulations.
Orry............................. Thank you.
Dupree........................ Where's your wife?
Orry............................. South Carolina,
with my family.
Dupree........................ Well, my Brenda is in
Tennessee. It's a little town near Shelbyville. I haven't seen her in about two
years now. I got a little girl, that I... I ain't ever seen, General. Sometimes
I wonder if I ever will.
Orry............................. You will, Josh. We
all will.
Dupreee...................... Well, I guess that
depends on General Lee now, doesn't it? Are you really thinking, he'd gonna be
able to march into Pennsylvania? (2)
Orry............................. (nods) He wants to
drive east and cut off Washington. We need a major victory in the North, and
Lee knows it. Trouble is, Hooker's army has him shadowed into Maryland. Now,
Hooker's been replaced by Meade, and Meade's a much better soldier.
Dupreee...................... Looks like Lee's got
his work cut out for him.
Orry............................. We all have, Major.
Dupress...................... Sir, you say you're
gonna be travelling through Tennessee? Might you drop off some letters to my
Brenda? I... I wrote five of'em. But you know how hard it is to get the mail
through, Sir.
Orry............................. Sure. It'd be my
pleasure.
Dupree........................ Thank you, General.

night.

slaves leaving in a long row, walking and pulling hand waggons. Clarissa gives
old former slave Joseph some money and wishes them well. Orry watches deeply
shattered. At the house, he is welcomes warmly.

Orry............................. Caleb! What is
this? Where're you going?
Caleb........................... Miss Brett said, we
could... we could go if we want to. We're leaving, Mr. Orry.
Orry............................. But this is your
home.
Caleb........................... No, Sir. This was
never our home. (walks on)
Joseph........................ I feel poorly, Miss
Clarissa Ma'am, 'bout leaving like this and all. But leastwise you won't have
all these mouths to feed.
Clarissa....................... What will you do in
Charleston?
Joseph........................ Oh, there should be
some work there now, Ma'am. All the men folk gone soldier and all. I should be
able to find something.
Clarissa....................... But until you do, you
need this to buy food for the children. (gives him money)
Joseph........................ Oh, Miss Clarissa, you
don't have to do this, Ma'am. You hardly have enough as it is.
Clarissa....................... We'll be fine.
Joseph........................ Thank you, Ma'am.
Clarissa....................... God be with you,
Joseph.
Joseph........................ I'll never forget Mont
Royal, Ma'am. Goodbye. (to Ezra) Take care of yourself (walks out with the
other former slaves)
Ezra............................. Gonna miss y'all.
Joseph........................ (to Orry) Goodbye,
Sir.
Orry............................. Joseph...
Madeline.................... Orry!
Orry............................. Madeline. (embraces
her, kiss)
Madeline.................... Oh my love.
Orry............................. Mama.
Clarissa....................... Orry, oh...
Orry............................. Good to be here. -
(watches the leaving former slaves)
Brett............................ I know what you're
feeling, Orry.
Orry............................. But why?
Brett............................ We couldn't keep'em
against their will with so many of' them running off.
Orry............................. I just can't
believe it. Even Joseph.

09.17 - Orry Ponders On The War
Talking woth Madeline, Orry shows
deep doubts about the war, especially with his way of life so much derailled
that even women have to do the field work.

Madeline.................... There's a chill in the
air tonight.
Orry............................. A frew days ago I dropped
off some letters for this Major's family. He hadn't seen nor heard from them
for over a year. This war isn't what we expected. It's just too much sacrifice.
It's changing us all.
Madeline.................... I do know what a hurtful
day you've had.
Orry............................. I had been blind,
Madeline, expecting everything to stay the same. You've all had to face so much
more than I ever imagined. You and Brett out in the fields, that... and Mama...
Madeline.................... Underneath that Southern
gentility, your mother is a very strong woman.
Orry............................. Her world has
fallen apart almost overnight. And that... that look in her eye...
Madeline.................... Orry, she does have a
right to a little sadness.
Orry............................. (arouses) I wish it
would stop.
Madeline.................... (softly) You are the
gentlest man I've ever known, and the strongest. Our family will survive
because of the strength we give one another. Don't let go. Don't let go. (they embrace)

09.18 - Tender Departure
After having a tender good-bys from
his mother, Orry rides off again.

Clarissa....................... (smiles)
Orry............................. (sits down) That's
my dearest memory on you, Mama, your smile.
Clarissa....................... Oh, Orry, I was just
thinking about you. What a rascal you were when you were little. Forever in the
swamps, hunting snakes with Joseph. Until your father made you understand that
the son who's going to inherit the finest plantation in these parts must behave
like a gentleman. (shows her needlepoint) Mont Royal, the way I remember.
Orry............................. It's beautiful.
Clarissa....................... (touches his face)
Orry............................. That's what you
used to do to put me to sleep.
Clarissa....................... (laughs)
Orry............................. You were always
there with that smile that said: 'Orry Main, you're destined to be my pride and
joy, and if I'm wrong and you turn out to be a no-account, I love you anyway.'
Clarissa....................... (laughs)
Orry.............................(kiss) Mama, you're
the best that ever was. (hesitates, rises, rides off)

09.19 - Quiet Before The Storm
July 1st,
1863, Gettysburg, PA: George - now promoted as Brigadier General - meets up
with a yankee party and finds his Brother Billy among them.

Billy............................. (to his men) We
gotta hold Lee here at Round Top. I want to take positions behind those boulders
and slow the advance of their skirmishes, when the rebels come up that hill by
six in the morning.
Bodford...................... Attention, company!
George........................ (rides up) At ease,
men. Any more coffee, Lieutenant? (dismounts)
Bodford...................... Yes, Sir.
Billy............................. George? My God,
what are you doing here?
George........................ (laughes, they
embrace)
Billy............................. Oh damn, I'm glad
to see you.
George........................ Good to see you,
little brother.
Billy............................. Come on, up to my
campfire.
George........................ How are you boys
holding out? Heard, the Rebs gave us quite a licking today.
Billy............................. My troops are
doing alright. How's the family?
George........................ Oh, they're fine. Our
little daughter Hope just celebrated another birthday.
Billy............................. I heard about your
promotion to the general staff at Third Corps.
George........................ Yes. Well, the
president finally interceded, so I can let somebody else worry about the
lobbyists and profiteers for a change.
Billy............................. After you'd been
out here for a while, you might decide Washington isn't so bad.
George........................ It's been so frustrating,
watching our boys being pushed around the map for so long. I'd like to think,
I'm a bigger help to Sam Grant by being out here in the field. -- Oh, we have
missed you.
Billy............................. Have you heard
from Brett?
George........................ Billy, it's hard
enough getting mail through from the North, much less the South. When ever
Constance and I are seperated...
Billy............................. George, I haven't
seen Brett in two years.
George........................ Nobody thought, the
war would last this long, Billy. I know, it'll work out. Just hold on and do
the best you can.

my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course.
I have kept the faith. My forebears laid up to me a crown if righteousness.'
US Soldier.................. Right row to shift - go!
Forward - march!
US Soldier.................. Infantry!

09.21 - Billy Can't Stand It Any Longer
After the fightings, Billy's thoughts
wander back to Brett, and he leaves duty for Mont Royal but with the promise to
be back before the next battle.

Billy............................. (daydreams about
Brett "I don't know how to say
goodbye, Billy." Billy "I
will be back.")
Bodford...................... Lee's whipped. All
General Meade has to do is stop him from crossing the Potomac.
Billy............................. Lee will find a
way to keep this damn war going. He'll lick his wounds and be back at us in a
couple of months. Rudy, I can't stand the thought that I might never see Brett
again. Before anything happens to me, I've got to make sure she's all right.
Bodford...................... You're not thinking --
Billy............................. I'm not thinking.
I've decided.
Bodford...................... Billy, it's desertion.
Billy............................. Absence without
leave. Before there's another battle, I'll be back. Make sure and tell Tom
that. (rides off)
Bodford...................... Good luck.

09.22 - Debriefing With Lincoln
Despite of victory, Präsident Lincoln
is enraged and desperate because it was failed again to pursue and capture Lee
once more.

Lincoln....................... (angry) My God! Lee
has gotten away again!
Stanton....................... General Meade felt,
his troops were exhausted, Sir.
Seward........................ He had re-inforcements
the next day. Lee had none.
Stanton....................... The torrential rain
made it difficult for the general.
Seward........................ And impossible for
Lee. He had his back to the Potomac. He was trapped. He was unable to get his
army back to Virginia. (1)
Lincoln....................... Again, we had them in
our grasp. We had only to reach out our hands and they were ours. But nothing, nothing
I could say or do would make General Meade move! -- That, by God, is all I
wanna hear today about the army of the Potomac. The victory at Gettysburg seems
so hollow now. God knows I never wanted this conflict. But I have sounded the
trumpet, and I can never call retreat. We must endure this fiery trial. We must
go on. (2)

09.23 - Billy On His Way South
On his way to South Carolina, Billy
gets ambished by a deserting Confederate soldier. Billy defeats that man in a
fight and uses his uniform to disguise himself from now on.

Raymond.................... Freeze! Right where you
are, son. I'd hate to have to blow your brains out. Now slide that gun over
here, now. Do it, boy! Or you're a dead man!
Billy............................. (throws over his
gun over)
Raymond.................... Mighty far south for a
Yankee, aren't you? Maybe, maybe you just got tired of the army, hm? Like I
did? Sure is a piece of luck for me, though, running into you. I told the Lord,
I could sure use a horse and some new boots. And look herehow he's provided.
Now... now you be a good boy and you take off them boots nice and slow, and I
might not kill you. Go ahead.
Billy............................. (Billy pulls off
one boot and throws it over)
Raymond.................... Near brand-new, ain't
they?
Billy............................. (Billy distracks
him, fight, shot)
Raymond.................... (dies)
Billy............................. (checks Raymond's
bag and wallet, finds a letter, reads) 'Private
Raymond. Twenty-third South Carolina Infantry.'

09.24 - Clarissa Realizes The Changes
At Mont Royal, the women take their
shares with field and house works, with pregnant Madeline working equally hard.
Clarissa demands not to be treated as an old woman. Then an oppulent coach rolls
in bringing Ashton, being dressed unappropriatly spendid.

Brett............................ You sure that's not
too heavy for you?
Madeline.................... No, it's fine. Glass of
water.
Brett............................ Oh Mother, you
don't have to do that. Why don't you just work on your needlepoint? - Mother,
what's wrong?
Clarissa....................... If you're gonna work
in the fields, least I can do is to keep this house. Why, as time goes on,
Madeline's gonna need this smock in her condition.
Brett............................ I know, but I think
you're trying to do more than you should.
Clarissa....................... (arouses) I am not an
old woman. I can do my share.
Madeline.................... Mother, nobody...
Clarissa....................... (rises, walks over to
the house) You don't have to say. I can tell by the way you all look at me.
Brett............................ (follows with
Madeline) Mother, if it's the other day...
Clarissa....................... It's every day. You
treat me like china to protect me from the war. This county has suffered
terrible losses at Gettysburg. Some of those boys were family, friends. And you
never told me.
Madeline.................... We would have. We just
don't want to upset you.
Clarissa....................... I have a right to
know. If anything ever happens to Orry, Charles or Billy, I need to know. And I
want you girls to come to me with your poblems like you used to. Because I do
needle point doesn't mean that's all I care about is the past.
Brett............................ Mother, I'm sorry.
Clarissa....................... Oh, those were
wonderful years, child, your growing up. I wish with all my heart it could be
that way again. But I know now, those times are gone - forever. They can steal
our food, the army can strip our barn, our people can all leave, and you girls
can go and live lifes of your own. But nobody - nobody is gonna take away my
memories.
Semiramis................... (appears) Worked all
morning to get these. They ain't hardly enough for dinner.
Brett............................ Well, you can't
make it rain.
Semiramis................... Maybe we can put in
another crop near the river.
Brett............................ No. The growing
season might last long enough to make it all worthwhile...
Semiramis................... If we plant close enough
to the riverbank, maybe we can gess some way to get enough water to get to the
seeds and make'em strong untill they can stand the sun.
Madeline.................... It's a wonderful idea.
We should try it. Now we have to go to the cotton field.
Brett............................ No, you've done
enough for one day.
Semiramis................... Miss Madeline shouldn't
go back out there no more.
Madeline.................... I'm fine. The baby isn't
due for months. I can still work hard.
Clarissa....................... I agree with
Semiramis. Why, in my day, ladies rested most of the time, waited on hand and
foot.
Brett............................ Mother, I can do...
Clarissa....................... Oh, I know. My day is
over. But that won't stop my feeling of joy at the new generation been born at
Mont Royal. (carriage arrives, they walk to see)
Brett............................ I didn't think,
people could afford carriages like that anymore.
Ashton....................... Hello Mother.
Clarissa....................... Ashton.
Ashton....................... (disembarks) Oh, I just
missed you so much that I had to come and lift your spirits. - Hello Brett. I
heard, you'd come home.
Brett............................ Ashton.
Ashton....................... Hello Madeline, dear.
Madeline.................... Hello Ashton.
Ashton....................... Mother, I brought gifts
for everyone. Some real coffee for you and the biggest ham you ever saw. And
Brett, I brought you material for a new dress. Looks like you could use it. In fact,
the old place looks pretty run-down.
Brett............................ We'll be back from
the fields before sundown, Mother.
Ashton....................... Fields? What are you
talking about?
Brett............................ We were able to
plant two acres of cotton this year. Somebody has to weed it.
Ashton....................... Well, of course they
do. And that's why we have slaves.
Brett............................ No, we don't. They
heard about Lincoln's proclamation and they left. We do the work now. (walks
off with Madeline)
Ashton....................... Mother, I want you to
see my new dress.

09.25 -
Ashton's Perfidous Scheme
Ashton behaves rather indelicate to
the other women and uses Semiramis to get Madeline's for conversation.

Ashton....................... Can you believe, Abe
Lincoln put darkies in the army? James says, it would be a disgrace to be
wounded by one, not alone killed by one.
Brett............................ How would James
know? He's not fighting.
Ashton....................... Semiramis, would you
like of my delectable ham?
Semiramis................... No, thank you, Ma'am.
Clarissa....................... Isn't there any
pleasant news from Richmond?
Ashton....................... I'm afraid, not,
Mother. All everybody talks about is getting revenge for Gettysburg and
re-taking Vicksburg. Why, they say we'll kill ten Yankees for every one of
ours.
Brett............................ (rises) Mother, if
everyone's finished, I'll clear the table. (leaves)
Clarissa....................... Thank you, Brett
dear. I'm a little tired. I'll rest for a while. See you all in the parlor
later. (leaves with Madeline)
Ashton....................... Let me help you with
these glasses, Semiramis.
Semiramis................... I can do myself, Miss Ashton.
Ashton....................... You work much too hard.
Semiramis................... I do what has to be
done.
Ashton....................... I know that we've had
our differences, but... but, we do have one thing in common. We both care a
great deal about this family.
Semiramis................... What do you mean?
Ashton....................... Well, you like Miss
Madeline, don't you?
Semiramis................... She a kind person.
Ashton....................... Then you can help her.
Maybe you can answer some questions for me.

09.26 - Madeline Reacts As Predicted
Madeline comes to Ashton and is being
confronted with her mother's ancestry in return.

Ashton....................... (knocking) Who is it?
Madeline.................... Madeline. (Ashton opens
the door) Ashton, I need to talk to you.
Ashton....................... Why, Madeline, I
couldn't sleep because I needed to talk to you, too.
Madeline.................... How could you have done
that to Semiramis?
Ashton....................... Oh, what ever you mean,
I was as sweet as sugar to that darky.
Madeline.................... She came to me, she is
so upset about your persistent snooping.
Ashton....................... All I wanted to ask
about is what the slaves talked about down at their quarter before they left.
And I understand that the grapevine has already picked up rumors and gossip
that started from quality white people.
Madeline.................... What are you trying to
say, Ashton?
Ashton....................... It came to me like a
bolt out of the blue, from a man in Richmond. Naturally, I wanted to come here
and see if the story had reached Charleston yet.
Madeline.................... What story?
Ashton....................... I have some rather
distressing news, Madeline. Your mother was part Negro. I know that you'd probably
told Orry and no doubt he said that our family...
Madeline.................... What is between Orry and
me is none of your business, Ashton.
Ashton....................... But I'm sure, he
doesn't know the whole truth. Maybe even you don't know the whole truth. Your
mother sold herself to men for money.
Madeline.................... You're lying.
Ashton....................... This awful man actually
had a portrait that looked exactly like you, so there's no doubt about it. It
hung in a house of ill repute in New Orleans. Well, your mother, she... well,
you know what I mean. But that was before your daddy...
Madeline.................... I don't wanna hear any
more.
Ashton....................... Well, I don't blame
you, Madeline. It must be so upsetting to know what your mother was.
Madeline.................... Yes, it is, Ashton.
Ashton....................... Now, what worries me
is... is Mother. I think, a family scandal would just...
Madeline.................... Ashton! I love your
mother. I love this family. If I thought one...
Ashton....................... There's still time,
Madeline. Now, it's bound to come out sonner or later. I know that you and Orry
wanted a baby. But you never really thought how that would affect our family,
if that baby turned out to be - ... well, let's just say, different. Now, if you
were no longer Orry Main's wife, then you couldn't ruin your baby's future or
disgrace our family, now could you, Madeline?
Madeline.................... You must hate me very
much, Ashton. (leaves)
Ashton....................... Yes, I do hate you very
much, Madeline. Elkanah Bent was right. Hatred is like wine - it improves with
age.

09.28 - Ashton Degrades Semiramis
Ashton openes Madeline's letter and
hands it to Semiramis, who she still has nothing but disdain. But Semiramis is
not impressed by Ashton's play.

Semiramis................... You used me.
Ashton....................... I haven't the fraintest
idea what you're talking about, child.
Semiramis................... Because of you, Miss
Madeline left.
Ashton....................... If I were you, I wouldn't
repeat such a serious accusation, or you're liable to find yourself in big
trouble. Oh, Madeline left this for Orry. Will you make sure, that he gets it,
please. (hands her over the letter)
Semiramis................... You opened it?
Ashton....................... Well, I- I- I thought,
maybe she'd leave a clue to where she's gone. After all, I do care about her.
Semiramis................... You don't care about
nobody but yourself. Since I was a little girl, I watched the way you treat
people. Like they wasn't even human, property to serve your every need.
Ashton....................... Mr. Lincoln can sign
all the proclamations he wants, but as far as I'm concerned, you will always be
a slave. So I would watch my tongue if I were you, Missy.
Semiramis................... Black or white, I
despise your kind, especially the way you even treat your own family. You
gonna pay for what you've done. Someday, you gonna know what it is to be alone.
Ashton....................... (theatralic) Leave. (laughes)

09.29 - Ezra's Water Wheel
Ezra, who also has stayed at Mont
Royal, successfully constructs a watering wheel and proudly demonstrates it to
Semiralis. Also also has a crush for Semiramis, but the young woman is still
not feeling ready for a relationship after what Salem Jones did to her. Billy
appears in a Southener's uniform, and the two coloreds instantly put him in a
hiding place for Ashton not to see him.

Ezra............................. (operates the
wheel)
Semiramis................... (excited) It work, Ezra!
Ezrea........................... Come see, Semi?
Semiramis................... You done it, Ezra. You
done it. Wait till Miss Brett sees?
Ezra............................. Wheel scoop up the
water, dump in in that deep sluice, then the water come down.
Semiramis................... I can see how smart it
is.
Ezra............................. Now all we got to
do is plouw that meadow and get it ready for planting.
Semiramis................... And the seeds, they
gonna live now, and we're gonna beat that sun, 'cause of you. You gonna make a
good farmer. You know how to do so many things. - Oh, we gonna lose the light
soon. I'm gonna run and tell them 'bout your waterwheel.
Ezra............................. Semi! I just wanna
say... I know how much Salem Jones hurt you.
Semiramis................... I told you not to ever
say that man name to me again.
Ezra ............................ You got a devil in
your soul, it's hurting real bad, Semi. You gotta let him out. Stop running.
Stop it, Semi. Talk to me.
Semiramis................... Sometimes I wake at
night and I think he be there. What that he did to me... I can't...
Ezra............................. It's alright.
Semiramis................... Just made me afraid to
really love somebody.
Ezra............................. Semi...
Semiramis................... Ezra, you the kindest
man I know, but I ain't sure that I ever be able to love. I'm sorry. (Billy
rides in)
Ezra............................. Semi!
Semiramis................... Ezra!
Ezra............................. (grabs a gun) Over
by the tree. -- (hides) That Mr. Billy. (steps out) Mr. Billy!
Billy............................. Ezra.
Ezra............................. Good to see you.
When you change side?
Billy............................. I'm just using the
uniform long enough to stay alive.
Semiramis................... Billy.
Billy............................. Been a long time,
Semiramis.
Semiramis................... Miss Brett gone be so
happy to see you. But you best be careful. Miss Ashton's up at the house. And
there's a Confederate camp down the road a piece, and she's real friendly with
the colonel.
Billy............................. I won't endanger
the family. But I'm not about to let Miss Ashton keep me from seeing my wife,
not after the hell I've been through.
Semiramis................... Come on, we gonna hide
you.

09.30 - Women In Worry
While the woman ask themselves over
Madeline's disappearing, Semiralis lures Brett out of the house by pretext.

Ashton....................... It just doesn't make
any sense. Something must have happened.
Clarissa....................... But why didn't
Madeline come to us, no matter what it was? She knows how we care about her.
Ashton....................... If she really cared
about you, Mother, and your feelings, she wouldn't have left in the first
place.
Brett............................ Ashton!
Clarissa....................... They were so happy
together. So many have lost loved ones. Preston Wayne, Tillet's best friend,
now they're both gone. Pres' son was just lost at... where was it, Brett?
Brett............................
Vicksburg, Mama.
Clarissa....................... With all these
terrible battles, I've forgotten.
Ashton....................... This is rediculous,
Mother. You shouldn't have to live on such dismal circumstances, constantly
being reminded of things that are gone. James and I would love it if you came
to live with us in Richmond.
Clarissa....................... Ashton, that's sweet
of you, but...
Ashton....................... You belong with people
who can look after you properly. We have a lovely townhouse, and you'll be more
then comfortable there until after the war.
Clarissa....................... But I just
couldn't...
Ashton....................... Ah, tell her, Brett. Surely
you can see how much better it would be for her.
Brett............................ Ashton's right,
Mama. You deserve better after all you've been through.
Ashton....................... We can pack you a trunk
and be off by the end of the week.
Clarissa....................... I'm still not so old
that my daughters have to tell me where I should live.
Ashton....................... Oh Mother, please...
Clarissa....................... Oh, I know you mean
well, my dear. But this is my home. This is where your father brought me as a
young bride. You children were born in that room upstairs. It's not just
memories. I could never leave, this house is my life.
Semiramis................... (appears) Pardon me,
Ma'am, for busting in like this, but I thought you'd all wanna know right away.
Clarissa....................... What is it,
Semiramis?
Semiramis................... Ezra waterwheel... it
work! It work!
Brett............................ Oh! That's
wonderful, that's wonderful. (embraces Semiramis)
Semiramis................... Brett, we can start on
that new patch at first light.
Brett............................ Alright.
Semiramis................... I need you to show me
the seed corn.

09.32 - Billy Quarrels Also
Brett and Billy spend some pleasant
hours on the jetty. Brett tries in vain to get Billy to stay. Billy ponders on
the war and reports his meeting with Charles on the battlefield. But by chance
they were spotted by Ashton riding out. When Brett gets him some provisions,
Ashton confronts Billy. But Brett forces her sister off with a pitchfork and
fixes her on the ground until Billy has ridden off safely.

Brett............................ It's so peaceful,
here. It's hard to believe, the war is so close. You know, when I was a little
girl, I used to come out here, I used to play on this dock. It's so beautiful.
But as much as I love Mont Royal, there was always something missing. Billy,
don't go back.
Billy............................. Tom would get me
by the scruff of the neck if I didn't. He's a drummer boy, he's just a kid, got
more guts than a sergeant. There's something about him, he's really a good kid.
Brett............................ You're gonna make a
wonderful father someday. (Billy rises) Billy?
Billy............................. Doesn't make sense
anymore. It's supposed be all honor and glory, but in the battle I found myself
in the middle of hell. And before I new it, there was Charles on his horse. It
was like a dream. Before I knew it, he was gone. Was I supposed to kill him?
Who is the enemy? It's a question I can't answer anymore.
Brett............................ (embraces him) I
love you, Billy.
Billy............................. I don't wanna go
back, Brett, but I have to. -- After all the killing at Gettysburg, both armies
will be licking their wounds. It's time for me to get back before the next
engagement.
Brett............................ You're not leaving,
Billy Hazard, without something better than army hardtack for the trail. (kiss,
runs off)
Ashton....................... (appears) Why,
Lieutenant Hazard. Have I the dishonor of addressing a Union deserter? Or is it
a Confederate? Either way, you'll be dead soon enough. Isn't that the customary
way of desposing of military trash?
Billy............................. Ashton...
Ashton....................... Perhaps each side will
execute you. Now, wouldn't that be amusing.
Billy............................. Don't you think
it's time we made our peace?
Ashton....................... There's a Confederate
camp down the road. And I'm sure that Colonel Randolph and his militia will
take pleasure in punishing a deserter. (wants to turn off)
Billy............................. Ashton!
Brett............................ (appears with a
fork) Get off the horse.
Ashton....................... Get our of my way,
Brett!
Brett............................ Get off the horse!
(Ashton laughes shortly, then dismounts) Get over there. (pushers her into the
hay, to Billy) You gotta leave now. (gives him a bundle) Here.
Billy............................. (mounts) I love
you, Brett Hazard. Never forget that. (kiss, rides off)
Ashton....................... (rises) Oh, Brett, what
are you doing? Get that thing out of my face.
Brett............................ (seriously) You're
a miserable frustrated woman, Ashton. And I know that you tried to have Billy
killed because you couldn't have him.
Ashton....................... Ah, Brett, don't be
redicul...
Brett............................ I won't let you do
anything more to hurt my husband. Now, you're gonna stay right here until Billy

09.33 - Ice Cold Departure
When Ashton leaves Mont Royal shortly
after in her carriage, she is seen off by Brett in an ice cold fashion.

Brett............................ (frostly) I do hope
you have a safe trip, Ashton. Maybe you could stop at that Confederate camp and
charme the colonel into giving you an escorte north.
Ashton....................... And if I never see you
again, little sister, it would be too soon.

09.34 - Field Hospital In
Northern Virginia
In a Union field hospital in Northern
Virginia, Virgilia organizes the daily business in a commanding fashion. This
sparks the criticism of overseer Mrs. Neal, demanding Virgilia to tone down and
reminds her to treat Confederate pations equal to their owns.

Virgilia........................ These men have been
in this wagon all night. Doctor! They're not supposed to be left here unattended.
-- No-no-no, don't take him into the surgical tent. Amputees have priority.
Take him into one of the other tents. -- (to a helper) There's too much
vinegar. The proportions are important if it's to have any medicinal effect. At
the next time I want you to make that like I told you. (turns off)
Helper……................... (kicks the bucket down
the stairs, leaves)
Virgilia........................ (turns back,
enraged) You get back here!
Mrs. Neal................... Mrs. Grady.
Virgilia........................ I want that man
discharged. This is not the first time that he's defied me.
Mrs. Neal................... Maybe so do you treat
him. We have to make do with less desirable sorts. But I give him a warning.
Virgilia........................ He'd give the men
slop if he could get away with it. I want you to get rid of him.
Mrs. Neal................... Need I remind you that
I'm the administrator and such decisions are my province?
Virgilia........................ I just want the best
possible treatment for our wounded.
Mrs. Neal................... Including the Southern
soldiers?
Virgilia........................ What do you mean?
Mrs. Neal................... I appreciate your
dedication, Mrs. Grady, but sometime it seems one-sided.
Virgilia........................ Mrs. Neal...
Mrs. Neal................... But I didn't come to you
to talk about that. It's Doctor Crawford. He feels, you don't show proper
respect when you address him.
Virgilia........................ I would show him
proper respect if he would do the same for his patients. But he treats them
like slaughtered animals. And he drinks the whiskey that's intended to ease their
pain when we run out of morphine.
Mrs. Neal................... We are desperately short
of surgeons, and under this conditions...
Virgilia........................ And he kills more
than he saves.
Mrs. Neal................... I don't want your
insubordination reported to Miss Dix. You're too good a nurse, Mrs. Grady. You
put the patients first and that's admirable. But you must watch your manner.
Our position here is difficult enough. I only say this for your own good.
Virgilia........................ I appreciate your
advice, Mrs. Neal. However, you being an administrator can't always know what's
right in an emergency.
Mrs. Neal................... You didn't even hear
what I said. You will do as I suggest. Please tend to the new arrivals. And
don't give morphine again unless a doctor expressly orders it. (turns off)
Virgilia........................ (loud) Mrs. Neal,
you don't need to worry about running short of morphine. A new shipment arrived
this morning, to the generosity of my friend, Congressman Greene. (walks out)

09.35 -
Madeline In Charleston
Madeline,
having found a stay at a small boarding house near St. Michaels, visits her
father's layer, Miles Colbert, to lay hands on his father's estate, but doesn't
want anything from Justine's fortune. Without telling him the real causes of
her departure from Mont Royal, she asks the layer to enable Orry the devorce if
wished and else keep her plays of stay hidden to anyone.

Colbert........................ It's been far too
long, Madeline. But you're as lovely as ever.
Madeline.................... Thank you, Mr. Colbert.
(sits down)
Colbert........................ Oh, you used to call
me Uncle Miles when you were a little girl. (sits down) There now, now that's
the smile I remember. I heard you'd got married again. I'm sorry I couldn't be
at the wedding.
Madeline.................... I've left my husband.
Colbert........................ Oh, I'm very sorry to
hear that.
Madeline.................... I'm staying in a small
boarding house near St Michael's.
Colbert........................ But your own house on
the Battery, that hasn't been opened since your father's death. Now, you could
live there.
Madeline.................... No. For personal reasons
I don't anyone to know where I am.
Colbert........................ I see.
Madeline.................... I need to talk to you
about Papa's estate. I know he was not a wealthy man when he died.
Colbert........................ A run of poor
investments, I'm afraid. But then, of course, there is your late husband's
money.
Madeline.................... I don't want anything
that belonged to Justin.
Colbert........................ Well, your father's
estate alone will be enough to provide you with a small income. And I'll make
the arrangements.
Madeline.................... Thank you, Uncle Miles.
But there's one other thing. When enough time has gone by, my husband can
divorce me for desertion. That is his right. I want you to give me your word
that until that time you won't tell anyone that I'm here in Charleston. Promise
me.
Colbert........................ You're my client,
Madeline. (rises) You're my client, and any information is priviledged. But
I... I do wish you'd reconsider. You know, if... if there was real love...
Madeline.................... It's impossible. I can
never go back to my husband. Ever.
