Scar............................. Fight!
Charles....................... No, no more fighting. I came to tell you, your people... your people are dead, Scar.
Scar............................. Now we fight. Maybe you die, maybe I die. Maybe we both die.
Charles....................... (pulls his gun) Scar, I could shoot you right now.
Scar............................. Fight. (ritual, short fight)

15.04 - George In Washington
Start 7.14, Length 0.59
Participants:
> Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton
> Statists: pedestrians
Location: Washington, an office building, entrance hall
George sees Stanley at his office in Washington.
George........................
Thank you.
Madeline.................... Thank you, Sir. If you two gentlemen will excuse me. George. (turns off)
George........................
What's all the commotion,
George........................ Could I speak to you in private?
(1) Script error: George formally introduces Stanley to Madeline, but Stanley should know her already (from episode 4 scene 2, the Hazard's visit at Mont Royal, where Madeline was present as a guest to the reception and the ball).
(2) Historical: President Johnson, a Democrat, followed a far more lenient and less aggresive course on the South than his political rivals demanded him to do. Especially the Republicans tried to torpedo the president's policies with repeated petitions and law proposals. The spectacular and to this date unseen impeachment attempt was based on Johnson having refused to sign into law a civil rights proposal tabled by the Republicans that wound grant immediate and full civil and voting rights to all colored people. For Johnson himself see footnote with episode 14 scene 9.

explains that it is Isabel who is behind this all.
George........................
(looks around) Very impressive,
George........................ I was just wondering. What are your plans as far as politics are concerned?
George........................ I see. Campaigns can get pretty expensive, I understand.
George........................ There's something that puzzles me, Stanley. You have wealth and now prominence and position, yet your appetite for venality and corruption never seem to be satisfied.
George........................
Let me tell you why I'm here. There's a company mining phosphates down on
George........................ There is also a company store dealing in script coupons juggling outrageous prices against the Negroes.
George........................ The Bureau may be helpless. But you, my brother, are not.
George........................ The mining company is a partnership between Madeline's brother-in-law, Cooper Main, and one Isabel Truscott, your wife.

Isabel..........................
Why, yes, George. What of it? I put it in my maiden name,
George........................ My God, you're unbelievable. Your partnership underwrites a company store that deals in illegal labor contracts, while your husband is head of the Freedmen's Bureau. Now what kind of ruination is that?
Isabel.......................... Why, I know nothing about the management of the mine or the store, George.
Isabel.......................... What? Don't be ridiculous. Nobody knows except him. I'm sure, George won't do anything to ruin the precious Hazard family name.
Isabel.......................... Your dear brother is cheating you out of a fortune.
Isabel..........................
George........................ I've misjudged you, Stanley. Thank you. (leaves)
Isabel.......................... (upraged) You idiot! Now look at what you've done! You're such a fool for your brother's good opinion. I made you. And now you're throwing it all away.

Ashton....................... Oh well, what can I say? It's... nice.
Eric.............................. Why, Mrs. Fenway, it's much more than simply nice. The previous owners imported the furnishings from all over the world.
Ashton....................... Yes, I'm sure. However, the furnishings are not to my nor my husbands's taste, though I'm sure the previous owners were affluent and influential people?
Eric.............................. Very.
Ashton....................... Would you happen to know who their closest acquaintances were?
Eric..............................
Oh, Mrs. Fenway, the cream of
Ashton....................... Now, what did you tell me that your name was again?
Eric.............................. Eric.
Ashton....................... Eric. It's a lovely name, one of my favorites. Eric, perhaps you could furnish me with a list of those names?
Eric.............................. I don't know as that would be ethical.
Ashton.......................
It's a pity. You see, my husband and I are poorly acquainted here in
Eric.............................. Me?
Ashton....................... Yes, of course, you. After all, you'd be coming to all our soirees. And what better way to get new clientele that through social events. In such a case, I think that my husband and I might consider a total purchase.
Eric.............................. Well, I think the list could be arranged.
Ashton....................... Yes, I think it could be. (they laugh stupidly)

George........................ Oh yes, I did.
Cooper........................ I can't believe it.
George........................ So that makes us partners. There's a good future in this for everyone. If you wanna work with us, we're happy to have you.
Cooper........................ With that woman?
George........................ That's enough, Cooper.
Madeline.................... George, please. We were hoping for the sake of the family to continue this partnership.
Cooper........................ What family?
George........................ If you'd rather not, I'll buy you out on the spot.
Cooper........................ (thinks) Alright, I'll go along with you. But don't forget, I own the land. You make one mistake, I'll throw you out. Do I make myself clear?
George........................ Very. Pleasure doing business with you. (Cooper turns off)
Madeline.................... Something's gone bad in him. It used to be just his anger toward me, but now...
George........................ Feeling powerless can turn an man, I know that. Let's hope, he stays sensible. Where's the place they're making the saw-blade?
Madeline.................... Tackett's Smithy.

Tackett....................... Nobody ever come around for it with the right amount of money.
Madeline.................... Mr. Tackett, the blade was never ready.
George........................ How much is it?
Tackett....................... Fifty Dollars.
George........................
There's your fifty, minus ten percent for the delay. Now I want that saw blade
delivered to
Tackett....................... Yes.
George........................ Good. Mrs. Main thanks.

George........................ Over here!
Madeline.................... (appears) I've brought you some lunch.
George........................ Every mine needs an office. If you find me a mattress, I'll bunk down here as well.
Madeline.................... You're staying?
George........................ Of course. But not in your kitchen with two chairs and a raggedy pillow for a bed.
Madeline.................... (laughes) Hello, Mr. Winant.
Winant....................... (appears) Mrs. Main.
Madeline.................... Scott Winant is the new mine manager. This is Mr. George Hazard.
George........................ So you're the mine manager, Mr. Winant?
Winant....................... Yes, Sir.
George........................ Where are you from?
Winant.......................
George........................ First thing I want you to do is tear up those illegal labor contracts. How does that sit with you, Mr. Winant?
Winant....................... You're the boss.
George........................ And tell me, what do you think a fair wage for a miner is?
Winant....................... I think fiveteen dollars a month.
George........................ Well alright, then. We'll go fiveteen. But let's make it fiveteen and up, according to skill.
Winant....................... Those are high wages for niggers.
George........................
These are fine men, Mr. Winant. I never want to hear them called anything but
men. If you have an objection to that, you can go back to
Winant....................... Yes, Sir. I mean, no, Sir. I have no objections.
George........................ If they want to buy land, establish a fair price and see that they get it. And offer farm tools to them at our cost. Agreed?
Winant....................... Agreed.
George........................ Alright, then. Now let's go see your landlord, shall we?
(2) Director's error: There is no evidence as to a kinship between Gettys and Madeline's first husband's LaMotte family. (In the novel, this kinship also doesn't exist, although a distant relative of Justin, the dancing instructor Desmond LaMotte, takes part in the K.K.K's actions.)

Gettys......................... Well, yeah, Cooper Main said as much.
George........................ Well, maybe he also told you, no more scrip. But I'm here to redeem what you have at the price agreed.
Gettys......................... Well, then have a look. Let me see if I can find it here. Oh, Mr. Winant, you still going to be wanting to rent that room?
Winant....................... That is my intention.
Gettys......................... Well, no scrip, my profits go down, rent goes up. Sorry.
Winant....................... Then the bed linnens get washed once a week.
George........................ What's the total there, Gettys?
Gettys......................... Oh, here, what is it... (counts up) Five-hundred and fifty-three Dollars.
George........................ If you have a pen, I have a bank draft. Gettys, may I suggest you lower your prices? If you don't, we'll be forced to offer supplies to our workers at cost.
Jolly............................ Oh, Mr. High and Mighty.
Gettys......................... This says three-hundred and fifty-three Dollars.
George........................ Shall we count the scrip together?
Gettys......................... (grimace) I feel like I've been cheated.
George........................ Oh, you do? Well, chalk it up to by being Mr. High and Mighty. Pardon me, Sir. (leaves)

George........................ You? For what?
Madeline....................
If you havn't been so concerned with my life,
