13.02 - Review

Start 1.13, Length 1.17

Participants:

> John Jakes (from the off only)

Location: none, small sniplets from previous episodes

Script error: Ambiguities to previous episodes

·          Where are Semiramis and Ezra, who were handed their own piece of land on Mont Royal in episode 12? Are they replaced by Issac and Jane?

·          George talks about "cildren". At season 2, his daughter Hope appears only; there is no telling about the birth of another child. (In the underlying novel, George and Constance are havong two children.) In Episode 14 scene 34 there is a boy sitting at the table for a very brief time - around 4 years of age - who then had to be born around 1862. Is this his second child?

·          Charles is now commonly called "Charlie", even by George. In all previous episodes, he was never called this (with the only exceptions by his fellow officer in Texas and his scouting partner Jim Pickles to the end of the Civil War).

·          There is no explanation given on why George and Constance did move from the family's feudal mansion of "Belvedere" into a much smaller and more average estate, and where George's mother Maude is now. Only in the dinner table scene in Episode 14 scene 34 there is to see the back of an unknow woman. Is that Maude or is it Isabel?

·          According to Charles' words, Gus Main is 5 years old. So he had to be born aroung 1860 or 1861, that is at least at the beginning of the Civil War. But ain episode 12, Gus was born at the end of the Civil War, and so he should be 1 to 2 years of age by now.

·          Is the prison sentence for Stanley and Isabel over by now? Or was he never charged? Stanley's carreer at the Freedmen's Bureau of the government would hardly been possible in the light of a conviction and prison time for fraud.

The author John Jakes summarizes what has happened in the previous episodes.

John Jakes................. This is John Jakes. Before the Civil War, Northener George Hazard and Southener Orry Main met as Cadets at West Point. They and their families became lifelong friends, but they made an enemy of the evil and sadistic Elkanah Bent. Bent also came to hate Orry's young cousin, Charles Main, who served under him. George married Constance Flynn, while Orry fell in love and married with Madeline Fabray. The two families remained close until the Civil War devided them. (George: Advance! / Orry: Fire!) George and Orry fought on opposite side, both rising to the rank of general, while secretly maintaning their friendship. (George: Maybe it's up to us, Orry, to start healing the wounds of this nation.) Charles Main served the Confederacy as a scout behind enemy lines. Elkanah Bent spent the war smuggeling black-market food and arms into the South while having an affair with Orry's cunning sister, Ashton. She was jealous of her brother and hated his wife Madeline. Towards the war's end, Orry and Charles destroyed all the Bent and Ashton's evil plans and Bent was killed. Now, the war is over, and Mont Royal has been burned to ground by renegades. Orry and Madeline have lost everything and are staying at a wealthy friend's home in Richmond while trying to find food for the hungy all across the defeated South. Now Ashton and Bent, alive through some bitter quirk of fate, come to seek Orry out, each with a different plan in mind. (1, 2)

(1) Script error:

·          Jakes says, that Bent hates Charles as well, who had served under him. In the years leading up to the Civil War, Charles did in fact serve in Texas, but not under Bent, who at that time was busy securing funds.

·          Jakes describes Ashton as to be "jealous" over Orry. This doesn't fit to Ashton's previous depiction. Jealousy was only known to her on her sister Brett, who had married Billy.

·          Jakes says, that Orry has destroyed Bent's plans during the Civil War togesther with Charles. That is incorrect. For stopping Bent, Orry had only help by Burdetta Halloran (blockade runners) and James Huntoon (armory depot). In conjunction with Charles, he worked to liberate George from Libby Prison and fought at the front line of Petersburg.

(2) Director's error: During this review, Charles is shown as the civilian from the new season 3, while Jakes talkes how Charles has served as soldier and scout during the war. These pictures, being in no relation to the words spoken, are no review but should the viewers carfully get used to the new actor of Charles.

13.03 - Appearing For Revenge

Start 2.30, Length 1.54

Participants:

> Elkanah Bent

> Ashton Huntoon

> Orry Main

> Supporting Roles: coach driver

Location: Richmond, in the streets, at night

Elkanah Bent and Ashton appear in Richmond, where Orry and Madeline are living in a town house. When Orry leaves the house to take a walk, Ashton disembarks the carriage and walks inside.

Bent............................ (to the driver) Stop, right here.

Orry............................. (leaves the house, walks down the street)

Bent............................ Well, look at what we have here. My good old friend, Orry Main. I've waited a long time for this.

Ashton....................... Now, you be careful. Remember the plan, El. I couldn't possibly bargain money out of Orry, him being angry at me and all, but I'm sure that you could do such a nice job of it.

Bent............................ Now, don't you worry your pretty little feet about that. It's gonna be business, pure and simple. Your brother wants to feed the South - seen as how our great Yankee conquerors can't afford to be bothered with such trivialities - I'm the man he has to deal with. He thinks I have what he needs. I will prevail.

Ashton....................... Now, I know where you're going to be and I will meet you there. However, I'd like to have a frew words with Madeline first. So now, you go on and do the best that you can. (kiss, goes off)

Bent............................ That's just what I'm gonna do. (to the driver) Move!

Ashton....................... (to herself) Uppity. Far too uppity.

Madeline.................... (appears) I could scarcely believe it when Jane told me.

Ashto......................... Why, yes, of course. Those Negroes do tell strange tales, don't they?

Madeline.................... What are you doing here?

Bent............................ (to himself) Mr. Main never did show me proper respect. He ruined my reputation with lies and slander. I'll see him in hell before I deal with him.

Driver.......................... Mr. Bent, Miss Ashton...

Bent............................ Shut your mouth! Stop, right here. (disembarks) Get out here. Get out!

Driver.......................... Yes, Sir. (drives off)

Bent............................ (follows Orry) Orry Main! (knifes him down) Your life is over, Main. I paid you back for your arrogance. Now, I'm gonna take care of your good friend, George Hazard, and your precious cousin, Charlie Main. Charlie ever tell you what he did to me down in Texas way? And you, you crippled me, just like yourself. You thought, you burned me all up. But you just got a piece of me. You wanna see what you did to me? Here. Here! (shows burn marks on his shoulder)

Ashton....................... I intend to take back everything that you and Orry have taken from me.

Madeline.................... Oh, we've done no such...

Ashton....................... Your home, the land, Mont Royal, all of it back.

Madeline.................... Ashton, you can't do that.

Ashton....................... I can't? (laughes) But of course I can, and I will. And I will use your little secret as the key to it all. I'm gonna bring you and my brother down so hard, you'll think the great horned God of Hades has descended upon you.

Madeline.................... Ashton, please.

Ashton....................... So, my dear Madeline, my advice to you is: Enjoy what you have, while you still have it. (leaves the house)

Madeline.................... Oh, my Lord.

Ashton....................... (appears, hesitates)

Bent............................ Don't tell me, you're gonna act the grieving sister now.

Ashton....................... Oh, what in God's name have you done, you fool?

Bent............................ I've righted a grievous wrong.

Ashton....................... But where's the money? It was supposed to just be about the money.

Bent............................ Money? What the hell is money? I never intended to do business with your brother. And he never would have dealt with me with his antiquated sense of honor. And now, he's dead.

Ashton....................... What about me?

Bent............................ You? I don't need you to do what I'm gonna do. I never needed you.

Ashton....................... (cries out, pushes him over the rim) Lord. (runs off)

13.08 - George In Thoughts

Start 9.29, Length 1.38

Participants:

> George Hazard

> Constance Hazard

Location: Lehigh Station, George's house, parlor

At Lehigh Station, George learns on Orry's death. He is deeply shattered and talks to Constance about the senselessness of that act.

Constance.................. George, you know dwelling on dark memories created a darkened heart.

George........................ I guess, Orry's death has brought back some memories too recent to bury. I had to search for this. (shows the half bill)

Constance.................. Oh, that old half-dollar that you and Orry split so many years ago. (1, 2)

George........................ We each kept a half and pledged to mend it together someday. And now, that day will never come.

Constance.................. Darling, I know, you miss him terribly.

George........................ I can't believe, he's gone. My God, Constance, he survived it all, the wars, the wounds, only to have some coward knife him dead. Where's the sense in that?

Constance.................. Poor Madeline and the baby must be suffering so.

George........................ Yes.

Constance.................. Things are so grim in the South right now, and she's all alone now.

George........................ I know.

Constance.................. Have you thought about going there?

George........................ Yes, I have, but...

Constance.................. I'm sure, it would be a great comfort to her, George. And perhaps, it would help ease the pain that you're suffering. The foundries and the ironworks do well under Mr. Quinlan. We're more than comfortable.

George........................ I don't know, Constance.

Constance.................. George, I know you. I trust you and your love. Go to Mont Royal. Help ease the pain and suffering there. Orry would've done the same for you.

(1) Script error: Constance calls the half note a "half-dollar". It shoutld be a half 10-Dollar-note.

Willa........................... Gallant. Captain? Lieutenant?

Charles....................... Private. New to the cavalry.

Willa........................... Truly? I do not have a mind for uniforms, but your manner is most deceptively genteel.

Charles....................... I'm a Southener, Ma'am. Manners count a great deal down there. If you'll allow me...

Willa........................... Yes.

Charles....................... (takes her trunks to the carriage, to the driver) You know Trump's playhouse?

Driver.......................... Yes.

Charles....................... Take the lady there.

Driver.......................... Yes, Sir.

Charles....................... If you please. (lets her board the carriage) You're an actress?

Willa........................... I am, indeed. You know the theater?

Charles....................... Squad, on my command you'll mount and move into formation. Squad - prepare to mount! Squad - mount!

Shagrue...................... (appears) Corporal May.

Charles....................... Quad - rest!

Shagrue...................... I see progress with the recruits, Corporal. Not much, but progress. Give these horses a rest, before they get confused and go wild. (turns off)

Charles....................... Yes, Sir, right away. Squad - dismissed.

Venable...................... (to himself) Main. (to Shagrue) Major Shagrue, I know that corporal, Major. He was at West Point, Sir. Graduates of the Point who fought for the South should be rightfully excluded from the amnesty.

Shagrue...................... Perhaps, Captain. But he's in my unit now, and Corporal May...

Venable...................... His name is Main, Sir. Charles Main. He was an underclassman at the Point, and I had to put him on report many times for actions bordering on insubordination.

Shagrue...................... As far as I'm concerned, Corporal Charles May is one of the best damn horse trainers I've ever seen - including me, and I'm pretty good. You leave him be, Captain. Do I make myself clear?

Venable...................... Yes, Sir.

Willa........................... (appears) "Shall I be tempted of the devil thus?"

Trump......................... "And is this Elizabeth come to torment Richard?"

Willa........................... Yes. I'm Willa Parker, Mr. Trump. Eddie Booth wrote to you on my behalf.

Trump......................... Booth?

Willa........................... Yes.

Trump......................... Booth? - Oh yes, I've heard of him. He thinks he's great, but he's really quite second-rate. His brother was quite a marksman, though, particularly at close range. I've never heard of you, my dear. (1)

Willa........................... I've played Portia and Beatrice...

Trump......................... Can you do arithmetic?

Willa........................... Arithmetic?

Trump......................... I don't need an actress. I need someone to manage the books before I go bankrupt. I also need someone to keep me sober till after the performances.

Willa........................... But I'm an actress.

Trump......................... Of course, and I'm as sober as a church warden, sometimes.

Willa........................... Mr. Booth told me that if I arrived...

Trump......................... Oh, blast Mr. Booth. (looks for a letter, reads) He says, you have talent, that you are bright and clever.

Willa........................... Then you can use me.

Trump......................... As I said before, I need a caretaker. I'm the star. I'm the person, people pay money to see. Take care of me, and I'll try to fit you into some rather minor roles in time.

Willa........................... No.

Trump......................... No. What do you want, child?

Willa........................... I will keep your books for you. I will tuck you into bed when you fall into your cups. But I want good roles.

Trump......................... By God, everyone thinks they can act. Very well, we'll give you a try. (puts one leg on the table, points to the boot) Off.

Willa........................... I am not a servant. I will, however, see you one hour before curtain, sober. (grabs the bottle, goes off)

Trump......................... By God. (laughes)

(1) Historical: Trump ironically referrs to the fact that Edwin ("Eddie") Booth's brother John Wilkes Booth was the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln. (Edwin Booth Wikipedia, John W. Booth Wikipedia)

13.13 - Cooper Appears

Start 17.08, Length 2.58

Participants:

> Madeline Main

> Jane

> Orry Main Jr. (no text)

> Cooper Main

Location: Mont Royal, wooden house, outside

At Mont Royal, Madeline with her son Orry Jr. and colored worker Janes were in front of the wooden house now serving as their home, when Madeline's brother-in-law Cooper rindes in. Cooper behaves rather harshly and threatens consequences for the slightest delay in repaying the mortgage on Mont Royal that he now holds.

Jane............................. Madeline? Madeline, somebody's coming.

Cooper........................ (rides up, dismounts)

Madeline.................... Oh, Lord. It's Cooper.

Jane............................. Your brother-in-law.

Madeline.................... Welcome to the new Mont Royal, Cooper. This is your nephew, Orry. What brings you here?

Cooper........................ Passing by. Thought I'd pay my respects.

Madeline.................... And survey my home.

Cooper........................ I do hold the mortgage, you know.

Madeline.................... You look thirsty. Come and have some water.

Cooper........................ I'm returning from Columbia. I had to sign a damnable loyalty oath to the Yankees.

Madeline.................... 'To the victor goes the honor and the spoils.'

Cooper........................ A loyalty oath. How can I be loyal to the people who destroyed all that I love?

Madeline.................... But you signed it.

Cooper........................ I didn't have much choice. But then, we all have to survive, don't we? You've been busy. Clever.

Madeline.................... We've worked the garden, and the vegetable crop has been very good to us.

Cooper........................ And how do you plan to pay the Negroes?

Madeline.................... With shares from the harvest.

Cooper........................ Have you lost your mind?

Madeline.................... Not in the least. If Mont Royal is to thrive again, then that is gonna take new thinking.

Cooper........................ For your sake, or little Orry's sake, I do hope this works. But mark it well, you miss one payment on that mortgage, and you'll be out - lock, stock, and barrel, and on the road with your Negroes.

Madeline.................... Orry wouldn't have wanted that. That's why he gave you the paper regarding the land.

Cooper........................ Orry is gone. Believe me, I do hope you succeed. I want that for the sake of the family. I do hope you understand the depths of my sincerity, Madeline.

Madeline.................... I never misdoubted it.

Cooper........................ Good day, my dear, and good luck to you. (rides off)

Jane............................. That man don't much like the change that's going on around here.

Madeline.................... Change comes harder for some people, Jane.

Cooper........................ Mr. Gettys.

Gettys......................... Well. Well, now. The illustrious Mr. Main.

Cooper........................ Well, I've come apiece. I could use a drink.

Gettys......................... Well, Sir, you must have come by Mont Royal. Your sister-in-law couldn't give you a drink?

Cooper........................ Water is one thing.

Gettys......................... Well. Well, Sir, do step right in. You know, there's some fancy doings up at Mont Royal.

Cooper........................ Nothing fancy about a few fields of crops.

Gettys......................... No, I'm talking about the school. The Negro school. Madeline Main been borrowing all over the country for lumber and hardware. Yeah. She's gonna educate her colored folk, so they can be as good as you and me. Ain't that something?

Cooper........................ You can't be serious.

Gettys......................... Oh, but I am. There's word of it all over the country. This is nice, isn't it? Yeah. Now, those creatures, they have grand ideas, poor things. It was the Yankees. The Yankees made them believe that they could be good as or better than us. But then, you and me, we know that never can be. Of course, Miss Madeline Main would have other thoughts on the matter. (drinks) You ever heard of a word 'kuklos'? It's a Greek word. It means 'circle'.

Cooper........................ I heard of the Klan.

Gettys......................... Yeah, why, we have ourselves a branch right here. You know, you ought to come around once in a while. We could use a man of breeding like yourself.

Cooper........................ Not interested. (turns to leave)

Gettys......................... Well, you might be, and right soon, Mr. Cooper Main. The war may be lost, but the cause ain't. (singing) Niggers and leaguers get out of the way / We're born of the night and vanish by day / No nations have we but the flesh of a man / and love niggers best, the Ku Klux Klan.

(1) Historical: The Ku Klux Klan, usualy short as K.K.K. or The Clan, a pseudo christian terroristic association in the United States, promoted radical and racist standpoints, even acts of violence against colored people and people supporting them. Identifying features were big white hoods and burning crosses. Appeared around 1860, founded by ex-Confederate Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest (disputed), still exists today after revival as isolated "hate cells". (Wikipedia)

Madeline.................... But for the Bureau of Education, I never dreamed we'd be so blessed to find a teacher this quickly, Miss Chaffee.

Prudence.................... I must warn you, Mrs. Main. I was an abolitionist before the war. Does that disturb you?

Madeline.................... Before the war, it might have. It wouldn't disturb Jane in the least, then or now. Would it, Jane?

Jane............................. No, never would. Now, don't go thinking, Madeline Main is wrong-minded, either. During the war, she spent herself feeding, clothing and sheltering hundreds of us. Worked herself to the bone.

Madeline.................... The men who are building it, they were once slaves at Mont Royal. But now, now they have their own parcels of land, and they will share in the crops.

Jane............................. Isaac Kano supervises. A fine man.

Madeline.................... You'll be seeing him frequently, if Jane has anything to say about it. (they walk up to the schoolhouse under construction)

Prudence.................... I shall require a platform for my table at that end. And I want windows large as possible, so the students may enjoy the full use of good light. Agreed?

Madeline.................... Agreed. Then you accept?

Prudence.................... With enthusiasm.

Isaac........................... Oh no, Ma'am...

Madeline.................... Please. This belonged to my late husband, Isaac. And now I want you to have it.

Isaac........................... Oh no, Ma'am. I...

Madeline.................... No, please. You can wear it on our wedding day. You're still planning on having a wedding, aren't you?

Jane............................. We're not hopping over some broomstick like in the old days.

Isaac........................... Yes, ma'am. We're having us one fine wedding with a real preacher and everything. And... we want you to be there with us, Ma'am.

Madeline.................... Isaac, will you stop calling me 'Ma'am' and 'Missis'? Those days are long gone.

Isaac........................... Yes, Ma'a-- (Madeline laughes) - Madeline. You make me feel so fine, and proud - Madeline.

Jane............................. We can't thank you nearly enough.

Madeline.................... You don't have to. You already have.

Reverend.................... Good to see you, Val. Ma'am. - Mrs. Main, you're no longer welcome in this Christian house of worship. Not anymore.

Madeline.................... I beg your pardon, Reverend?

Gettys......................... Well, coloreds can't worship in God's house no more. I'm talking about you, Missis Dark.

Madeline.................... Excuse me?

Gettys......................... See, I seen the daguerreotype photograph of your grandma, and so it may be long gone but I seen it. So have the others. Cooper Main knows it, too. Ain't that right, Cooper?

Cooper........................ Shut your mouth, Gettys. Shut your damn mouth.

Gettys......................... Boy, don't you go damning me on Sunday. Now, it is a fact that Mrs. Main is one-eighth Negro. So now go on, Missis Dark. Get on out of here.

Madeline.................... (to Prudence) I will return for you after the service is over, Prudence.

Prudence.................... No, you won't. There is no Christian God blessing this house of abomination.

Cooper........................ (knocks Gettys down) You are filth, Gettys. You shame me.

Gettys......................... Boy, you better get a grip on yourself, because there ain't no place for honor in a world gone mad with defeat. There is only death and destruction and the hope that we can get things right again for ourselves. And I know, you feel just like we do, don't you? Don't you, now? (loudly) Now, I ain't about to fight you. But I will offer you my hand in friendship on behalf of the brethren here. (Cooper turns off) You see? There ain't no chivalry left in the South.

Madeline.................... Cooper, come with us.

Cooper........................ (turns off and enters the church)

Location: Mont Royal, outside

George rides in at Mont Royal and is greeted joyfully. He expresses his regrets on Orry's death to Madeline. Then Madeline reports to him that even three months after the act, the perpetrator is still unknown

Worker....................... (to George) How do you do, Sir?

Worker....................... Afternoon, Sir.

George........................ Madeline. Madeline?

Madeline.................... (looks up) George? George! (runs to him) George Hazard! (they embrace and laugh)

George........................ Look at you. You're more lovely than ever.

Madeline.................... Oh, I'm awfully dirty.

George........................ Even so, all the more beautiful.

Madeline.................... Where's Constance?

George........................ She's at home in Lehigh Station with the children. I cabled I was coming. Didn't you get it?

Madeline.................... Cabled? (laughes) It's probably still in Charleston waiting delivery. Only bad news travels swiftly, I'm afraid.

George........................ Madeline, I can't... I can't tell you how sorry I am about Orry's death.

Madeline.................... Murder. Orry was murdered, George. But life at Mont Royal goes on, and there is so much to do. It eases the pain. Let's get you a drink at the house. It's good to see you. (they walk along)

George........................ I know I wouldn't be alive today if Orry and Charlie hadn't broken me out of that Confederate prison. How is Charlie? Have you heard from him?

Madeline.................... Not in some time. He headed west, that's all I know. His son Gus, he's with some good people in Chicago.

George........................ And Orry's killer, what do you know about him?

Madeline.................... What law remains in the South, George, is in the form of troops of occupation and night-riding vigilance committees. No-one knows the identity of Orry's killer. No-one.

Director's error: The floor layout of the Mont Royal ruins inside and outside doesn't match the house of the former eposides. The back wing is missing, as well as the stone back terrace and the second row of colums at the veranda. The indication of the stais to the former second floor is at a wrong location. The overall symetrical position of the outside chimney also doesn't match the a-symetrical form of the original building. And where does that old, crippled three from there in the flower arrangement in front of the veranda?

The chief medic releases the man on grounds of the need for beds for men with more chances to recuperate.

Doctor.......................... How long has this man been here?

Assistant…................ Weeks. He was fished out of the river ranting and raving, so we keep him restrained. He's developed some sort of brain fever.

Doctor.......................... Well, Sir, how do you feel today?

Bent............................ Captain. I've achieved the rank of captain.

Doctor.......................... Captain what?

Bent............................ I don't remember my name. I remember the once great and sovereign state of Georgia. I remember West Point, where my superiors compared my tactical maneuvers to Napoleon's.

Doctor.......................... Captain...

Bent............................ Jefferson Davis. If Jefferson Davis had not failed to recognize my abilities, the South would not be suffering this humiliation at the hands of the North. I wish to be released from this institution, Sir. I have an honorable history of service with the South.

Doctor.......................... Seems quite lucid to me.

Assistant…................ Oh, but, Sir...

Doctor.......................... Release him immediately. Leave the bed space for truly sick men.

George ist devastated over the primitive ways of life at Mont Royal and offers his help, but Madeline proudly rejects it.

Madeline.................... Everything was built right here. The wood was salvaged from the old house, and then it was cut by hand and finished much the same way. The schoolhouse as well.

George........................ They did a fine job. But surely it would have been cheaper to have the lumber cut by a local mill.

Madeline.................... There is no such thing, George. Sherman's troops laid waste to everything they got their hands on. Isaac Kano and the other men from the plantation did the work.

George........................ Forgive me for asking, but how much did it cost?

Prudence.................... Mr. Hazard, how very rude of you.

George........................ Miss Chaffee, Orry Main was my best friend. I come down here and I find his widow laboring in the fields like a common farmhand. I see her table is spread with an absence of meat or poultry. And I see her hands are rubbed raw. - Forgive me, Ladies. Would you indulge us with a few moments of privacy?

Madeline.................... (to Orry Jr.) You go to Jane, honey. That's a sweetheart. (Prudence and Jane leave)

George........................ I don't intend to be rude, Madeline, but I do speak directly. How much are you in debt?

Madeline.................... There is no debt, George. We live quite simply off the land. And though meat is rare I think the food is quite good, as your empty plate attests.

George........................ Madeline, I can help. Please, accept it for the sake of our friendship and what's gone between our families.

Madeline.................... George, I know you mean well with your offer. But if Mont Royal is to survive, it must do so under my hand. Charity will just tarnish that effort. Don't you see?

Madeline.................... Cooper? He hates Northeners. I'm afraid, the war has taken it's toll on his pride. He won't see you.

George........................ But he's a businessman, Madeline. He'll see me. I know how you feel about charity, but I've got a better idea. A partnership.

Madeline.................... Partnership?

George........................ I wanna build a sawmill, right here in Mont Royal, for you to manage. Imagine it, the only mill for miles around right here, where the logs can be floated down the river. Now, the South needs rebuilding, and you can aid that, as well as yourself. Madeline, what do you say?

Madeline.................... Oh, I have nothing to offer in return.

George........................ (takes out the half bill) Do you know what this is?

Madeline.................... Yes. Orry told me. I have the other half.

George........................ Then let's make it whole and start mending our lives. This will be our contract.

Madeline.................... (thinks, then) Mr. Hazard, Sir, I do believe, we have ourselves a deal.

In Santa Fe near the Mexican border, Ashton hires herself out in a cheap brother. She is suffering under Madame Rosa, who runs the enterprise with her brother-in-law. An aged but polite customer appears in her room introducing himself as the piano salesman Mr. Fenway. When Ashton laments to him over her lost home, the gentle-hearted man aggrees to help her for a return.

Customer.................... I paid for fun. And, Lady, you ain't it. Coulda have had better from a dead cow.

Ashton....................... If you want fun, take a bath next time.

Customer.................... Well, if I have to bathe, I'd rather do it to myself.

Ashton....................... Well, then do it.

Customer.................... (leaves)

Fenway....................... (knocks the door)

Ashton....................... (openes the door) I told you to take a bath! --

Fenway....................... Excuse me. I paid for the whole night.

Ashton....................... Why, hello. Aren't you ambitious?

Fenway....................... But I don't really require the unusual.

Ashton....................... I don't do the unusual. Unless, of course, you pay me, not Rosa. Then it's double.

Fenway....................... That's fine.

Ashton....................... Would you like me in a nightgown or bare.

Fenway....................... Ahm, a nighthown would be fine.

Ashton....................... I'll get some clean sheets.

Fenway....................... See, I sell pianos.

Ashton....................... I'm not in the market.

Fenway....................... I sell Hochstein pianos to church elders. I'm one tuckered man. I just need a little cuddling and a good night's sleep. People call me Fen. I don't much favor the rest.

Ashton....................... Well, as long as you don't bring the piano to bed, you can have as much sleep and cuddling as you'd like.

Fenway....................... Madame Rosa says, you're a lady of quality.

Ashton....................... Why, yes. Yes, I am.

Fenway....................... I'm sorry, you've fallen on hard times.

Ashton....................... And you, my dear Sir, sell pianos. We all take money however we can get it.

Fenway....................... Oh yes, of course. Quite. (points to the Mont Royal picture) Is that your home?

Ashton....................... Yes. It's the most beautiful place on earth. And someday soon, I'm gonna return and claim it for my own.

Fenway....................... Then perhaps I can be of service in that endeavor.

Ashton....................... Well, maybe you can. However, I should tell you that the last person who tried to help me died a most unfortunate death. Let me help you with this. (opens his shirt)

Script error: What has brought Ashton to Santa Fe after Orry's death, and why of all places into a brothel? (In the novel, there is a string of actions with Ashton set up to wait in Santa Fe for her lover Lamar Powell to bring Gold from a mine in Sacramento but who is killed by Indians instead, and why Ashton had to do this to support herself.)

Waiter......................... Will that be all?

Charles....................... Yes. (waiter leaves)

Willa........................... I have seen so much injustice and it only gets worse. That's why I feel so strongly about the Negroes and the Indians.

Charles....................... You've seen city life, but you've read about injustice, and there's a world of difference.

Willa........................... I don't understand. How can you save one and fight all the rest?

Charles....................... I don't wanna fight anymore, Willa. But I'm a soldier. That's what I do.

Willa........................... But why do you have to fight? See, the Cheyenne and the Comanche, they have a reason. They're fighting to protect their way of life. How would you feel of someone was trying to destroy your way of life?

Charles....................... Well, it already was, and I didn't much care for it.

Willa........................... When will you be back?

Venable...................... (walks by, to his companions) Excuse me, gentlemen.

Charles....................... Go away, Venable.

Venable...................... Captain Venable to you.

Charles....................... Only on the parade ground. Go away, Venable.

Venable...................... The man who promoted you to sergeant, Main, may have forgotten the war, but I haven't. I have power over you, and always will, in this man's army.

Charles....................... I have to go.

Willa........................... Reveille isn't until five. Come back to bed.

Charles....................... I have to take my horse to the post. I'm going to Chicago.

Willa........................... Chicago?

Charles....................... Willa, I have a son. I haven't seen him in a while. Tomorrow's his birthday. Friends of mine, a brigadier and his wife, take care of him for me up North. I didn't know how to explain it to you.

Willa........................... What else haven't you told me? Am I just your kept woman? Does your wife know about your actress whore?

Charles....................... I don't have a wife. Willa, you... you once asked me if I was ever in love. And her name was Augusta. We were gonna be married during the war, but she was killed in Virginia. She left me a son. (2)

Willa........................... How old is he?

Charles....................... Five.

Willa........................... What's his name?

Charles....................... Gus. Willa, I swore I'd never let myself feel this way again.

Willa........................... Do you?

Charles....................... I don't know. (kiss, turns off)

Willa........................... Charlie? Will you come back?

Charles....................... I don't know. (leaves)

(2) Script error: Charles tells Willa, that he and Augusta had plans for a marriage and that she had been killed. Both these informations doesn't match to season 2. Augusta loved Charles, but they never talked about a wedding. And she had not been killed but died all by herself on childbirth.

Location: St. Louis, stable

When Charles tenders to his horse, Captain Venable appears once again - this time reinforced by more officers - and expresses his hatred because his family in Kentucky was desecrated and killed during the war. He starts an unfair brawl, hitting Charles badly and leaving him unconscious. A unknown man dressed in rawhide intervenes with a gun and chases off the officers.

Venable...................... (appears with other soldiers) What do you have to say now, Main?

Charles....................... Well, looks like you got me outnumbered. But then again, that'd be your way, wouldn't it, Venable? Boys.

Venable...................... Better odds than most raped and murdered woman had in Kentucky.

Charles....................... Oh, I wouldn't know. I've never raped and murdered anybody myself.

Venable...................... Guerillas from your army killed my mother, then raped and murdered my sister. Display of Southern chivalry, no doubt. Take thin son of a bitch. (fight)

Jackson...................... (outside) Look here, my boy, you stay here. He'll be all right.

Jim............................... But, Uncle Dolph...

Jackson...................... Be quiet. We'll have some fun.

Jim............................... Okay.

Jackson...................... (to the dog) You stay. (walks inside)

Venable...................... (kicks Charles to the floor) Pick him up.

Jackson...................... (appears) Hold it! Alright, Lieutenant, drop that pick in your hand before I put a hole in your cap. I don't know what this is about, say four-to-one don't seem fair. So you better get. Go on, get! (knocks Venable down) A kick in the head feels right poorly, Captain. You aim to make that discovery? No? Crawl outta here like the lizard you are on all fours. Go on, go on. (Venable walks off, to unconcious Charles) Sergeant? Hey, soldier boy?

Jackson...................... Four days. What's your name, soldier?

Charles....................... Charles Main.

Jackson...................... I'm Adolphus O. Jackson.

Charles....................... Where are we?

Jackson...................... A way west into Missouri. We're heading wester. (lubricates Charles' face) Here we go.

Charles....................... What the hell is that?

Jackson...................... Oh, it's hust a little herbs and buffalo brains. It's a good salve, brings down the swelling. Put in on yourself where it hurts. You know, them fellas that was beating on you, they was determined to finish you, but I run them off.

Charles....................... I guess I owe you for that.

Jackson...................... What was it about?

Charles....................... It's an old grudge.

Jackson...................... Must be. They charged you with desertion the next day, so I pulled you out of there. If you go back now, they'll jail you or shoot you. If the Army don't, your soldier friends will finish that job. So you can stick with us if you like. We're the Jackson Trading Company. This is my brother's boy, Jim.

Jim............................... Hi.

Jackson...................... He's a little touched in the head, but he's a good lad. Well, hell. I'm gonna level with you. I pulled you out of that fight because I need a man to cover my back that can shoot. Now, Jim here, he tries, but he's the one that needs caring for. We trade with the Arapaho and the Cheyenne. There's considerable profit in it, too. I'll give you 20 percent, and if you prove out, I'll make you a full partner.

Charles....................... Presuming you need a partner, do you mind me asking what happened to your last one, do you?

Jackson...................... I ain't gonna lie to you. I lost old Dean on the last trip. He grabbed a Cheyenne woman who had a husband and they carved him up. (laughes) It's sweet country out there. They got plenty of the fairest maidens you ever seen that ain't married. I get along with the Cheyenne because I admire them, and I respect them. What do you say?

Charles....................... Under the circumstances, it looks like you've got yourself a partner.

Jackson...................... Alright, Sergeant. Can you shake? (shakes the hand)

Charles....................... It wasn't hard. I have a boy myself. It just takes patience.

Jackson...................... Ah, speaking of that, let's load up and move out. Wanna catch the Cheyenne before they go into hiding for the season of making war. Gonna learn you the Cheyenne, Charlie. Learn you well, so you can keep your hair. (dismounts) That's it, Jim. You're doing good.

Willa........................... Mrs. Duncan?

Maureen..................... Yes.

Willa........................... I'm Willa Parker. I wrote to you.

Maureen..................... Ah, it's Maureen, dear. Please come in.

Willa........................... (inside) The Army calls him a deserter, but he just received a promotion. All he said in his letter to me was that the Army wasn't working out and he was heading west.

Maureen..................... Do you know about his son? (Willa nods) Well, Charlie writes to him, and he told Gus about you in his letter. We also received letters, but he didn't say much more than you know already. Something must have gone terribly wrong in Charlie's life. He's not a deserter. He was a fine soldier.

Willa........................... He wrote about me?

Maureen..................... And was very flattering, but after meeting you, he clearly was not flattering enough.

Willa........................... I'm in love with him.

Maureen..................... Charlie is easy to love and difficult to hold on to. But he is forever loyal to his commitments once they are made. This charge of desertion is very disturbing. My husband, Brigadier Duncan, had put in for a transfer to St.Louis so that Charlie could be near his child. (Gus appears) Hello sweetheart. (to Willa) This is Charlie's son, Gus.

Willa........................... Hello, Gus. I'm Willa.

Gus.............................. You know my Papa?

Willa........................... Yes.

Gus.............................. He sent this to me. (shows a wooden horse)

Willa........................... He did?

Gus.............................. Are you the beautiful lady that makes my Papa happy?

Willa........................... Oh, yes.

Maureen..................... (low) Sweetie, don't say that.

Willa........................... I do hope so.

Jackson succeeds to find refuge and temporary safety with Charles and Jim in the medicine lodge.

Jackson...................... There be your Cheyenne, Running Wolf's band. They're peaceable, as Cheyenne go. Running Wolf's a real kick if he ain't too liquored up.

Charles....................... You know him, then.

Jackson...................... I've had some good trades. He likes me better than most whites. Yeah, Running Wolf, he's peaceful for the most part, but watch your step with his women. (ride into the camp, Indians gather, other Indians appear)

Charles....................... Adolphus, who the hell is that?

Jackson...................... Oh hell. Dog soldiers. Don't do nothing foolish, Charlie. Just listen to me. And when I tell you to do something, for God's sake do it quick.

Scar............................. (dismounts)

Charles....................... I gather this is not Running Wolf.

Jackson...................... You gather that up right. This is Man-ready-for-war. I call him Scar. I reckon you can see why. That son of a bitch, he's always messing up my business dealings.

Charles....................... Does this happen often?

Jackson...................... It does. It does. [cheyenne]

Scar............................. [cheyenne]

Jackson...................... They're funny. Says he's gonna lift our hair.

Scar............................. [cheyenne]

Charles....................... And now what?

Jackson...................... Well, we're gonna get down and walk around like we own the place. Just listen to me, Charlie, and take good care of Jim. (dismount) Listen, Charles, grab Jim's hand. Can you run?

Charles....................... Run? Yeah, I can run.

Jackson...................... Well, Jimmy can't run much, so you'll have to drag him.

Charles....................... And where am I dragging him to?

Jackson...................... Just follow me. Are you ready?

Charles....................... No.

Jackson...................... Ready or not, here it goes. (pulls Scar's breechcloth, they run) Come on now! (they enter a tent) We're safe. Won't need weapons here.

Charles....................... This is just fun. Running in here, that's real good. Haven't you figured they know how to get in?

Jackson...................... They won't. You see, it's like the old days in Europe. When a thief was running from the law, he could go into a church and they gave him sanctuary.

Charles....................... This isn't exactly a church.

Jackson...................... Of course it is. This is a medicine lodge. Same as a church to the Cheyenne. Of course, once we walk out that door, they'll skin us alive and feed us to the fish.

Half Bear.................... (enters the tent) [cheyenne]

Jackson...................... He says that Chief Running Wolf will come here tomorrow and that we're safe till then, and he'll give his verdict. He also says that I shouldn't have grabbed Scar's breechclout and humiliated him.

Charles....................... Tell him, good advice always comes late, doesn't it?

Jackson...................... Well, at least I bought us some time, didn't I?

Jolly............................ You come to join our happy band of brethren, Mr. Main?

Cooper........................ Let's say, I'm interested.

Gettys......................... Cooper's a good man, Captain.

Cooper........................ Never happen.

Jolly............................ (laughes bitterly) It's happening in Virginia and Maryland and all over the North. (hands him a cowl) Try that on for size, Mr. Main.

Cooper........................ I don't have to hide my face to show my feelings.

Gettys......................... No no, Cooper, it ain't about hiding.

Jolly............................ Of course not. See, they superstitious.

Gettys......................... They superstitious.

Jolly............................ And we just gonna scare them a bit. (they laugh) Mr. Main, since you are the newcomer, you're gonna have the honor of lighting the fire. (hands him a torch) Take it. This way Sir. Go on, Mr. Main, light it. - (Cooper burns the cross) Let's ride, boys! Let's do it!

Jane............................. Madeline. You still think the old way, Isaac. She's my friend.

Isaac........................... Yeah, but she white. Sort of.
