Script error: Ambiguities to previous episodes
· Where are Semiramis and Ezra, who were handed their own piece of land on Mont Royal in episode 12? Are they replaced by Issac and Jane?
· George talks about "cildren". At season 2, his daughter Hope appears only; there is no telling about the birth of another child. (In the underlying novel, George and Constance are havong two children.) In Episode 14 scene 34 there is a boy sitting at the table for a very brief time - around 4 years of age - who then had to be born around 1862. Is this his second child?
· Charles is now commonly called "Charlie", even by George. In all previous episodes, he was never called this (with the only exceptions by his fellow officer in Texas and his scouting partner Jim Pickles to the end of the Civil War).
· There is no explanation given on why George and Constance did move from the family's feudal mansion of "Belvedere" into a much smaller and more average estate, and where George's mother Maude is now. Only in the dinner table scene in Episode 14 scene 34 there is to see the back of an unknow woman. Is that Maude or is it Isabel?
· According to Charles' words, Gus Main is 5 years old. So he had to be born aroung 1860 or 1861, that is at least at the beginning of the Civil War. But ain episode 12, Gus was born at the end of the Civil War, and so he should be 1 to 2 years of age by now.
· Is the prison sentence for Stanley and Isabel over by now? Or was he never charged? Stanley's carreer at the Freedmen's Bureau of the government would hardly been possible in the light of a conviction and prison time for fraud.
The author John Jakes summarizes what has happened in the previous episodes.
John
Jakes................. This is John Jakes. Before the Civil War, Northener
George Hazard and Southener Orry Main met as Cadets at
(1) Script error:
· Jakes says, that Bent hates Charles as well, who had served under him. In the years leading up to the Civil War, Charles did in fact serve in Texas, but not under Bent, who at that time was busy securing funds.
· Jakes describes Ashton as to be "jealous" over Orry. This doesn't fit to Ashton's previous depiction. Jealousy was only known to her on her sister Brett, who had married Billy.
· Jakes says, that Orry has destroyed Bent's plans during the Civil War togesther with Charles. That is incorrect. For stopping Bent, Orry had only help by Burdetta Halloran (blockade runners) and James Huntoon (armory depot). In conjunction with Charles, he worked to liberate George from Libby Prison and fought at the front line of Petersburg.
(2) Director's error: During this review, Charles is shown as the civilian from the new season 3, while Jakes talkes how Charles has served as soldier and scout during the war. These pictures, being in no relation to the words spoken, are no review but should the viewers carfully get used to the new actor of Charles.

Bent............................ (to the driver) Stop, right here.
Orry............................. (leaves the house, walks down the street)
Bent............................ Well, look at what we have here. My good old friend, Orry Main. I've waited a long time for this.
Ashton....................... Now, you be careful. Remember the plan, El. I couldn't possibly bargain money out of Orry, him being angry at me and all, but I'm sure that you could do such a nice job of it.
Bent............................ Now, don't you worry your pretty little feet about that. It's gonna be business, pure and simple. Your brother wants to feed the South - seen as how our great Yankee conquerors can't afford to be bothered with such trivialities - I'm the man he has to deal with. He thinks I have what he needs. I will prevail.
Ashton....................... Now, I know where you're going to be and I will meet you there. However, I'd like to have a frew words with Madeline first. So now, you go on and do the best that you can. (kiss, goes off)
Bent............................ That's just what I'm gonna do. (to the driver) Move!

Trump......................... No. What do you want, child?

Cooper........................ For your sake, or little Orry's sake, I do hope this works. But mark it well, you miss one payment on that mortgage, and you'll be out - lock, stock, and barrel, and on the road with your Negroes.
Madeline.................... Orry wouldn't have wanted that. That's why he gave you the paper regarding the land.

On his way home, Cooper stopps by at an offside tavern. The host Gettys tells him that Madeline plans to erect a school for blacks at Mont Royal. Gettys openly tries to get Cooper's engagement for the Ku Klux Klan.

Cooper........................ You can't be serious.
Gettys......................... Oh, but I am. There's word of it all over the country. This is nice, isn't it? Yeah. Now, those creatures, they have grand ideas, poor things. It was the Yankees. The Yankees made them believe that they could be good as or better than us. But then, you and me, we know that never can be. Of course, Miss Madeline Main would have other thoughts on the matter. (drinks) You ever heard of a word 'kuklos'? It's a Greek word. It means 'circle'.
Cooper........................ I heard of the Klan.
Gettys......................... Yeah, why, we have ourselves a branch right here. You know, you ought to come around once in a while. We could use a man of breeding like yourself.
Cooper........................ Not interested. (turns to leave)
Gettys......................... Well, you might be, and right soon, Mr. Cooper Main. The war may be lost, but the cause ain't. (singing) Niggers and leaguers get out of the way / We're born of the night and vanish by day / No nations have we but the flesh of a man / and love niggers best, the Ku Klux Klan.
(1) Historical: The Ku Klux Klan, usualy short as K.K.K. or The Clan, a pseudo christian terroristic association in the United States, promoted radical and racist standpoints, even acts of violence against colored people and people supporting them. Identifying features were big white hoods and burning crosses. Appeared around 1860, founded by ex-Confederate Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest (disputed), still exists today after revival as isolated "hate cells". (Wikipedia)

Prudence.................... I must warn you, Mrs. Main. I was an abolitionist before the war. Does that disturb you?
Madeline.................... Before the war, it might have. It wouldn't disturb Jane in the least, then or now. Would it, Jane?
Jane............................. No, never would. Now, don't go thinking, Madeline Main is wrong-minded, either. During the war, she spent herself feeding, clothing and sheltering hundreds of us. Worked herself to the bone.

Madeline....................
Not in some time. He headed west, that's all I know. His son Gus, he's with
some good people in
George........................ And Orry's killer, what do you know about him?
Madeline.................... What law remains in the South, George, is in the form of troops of occupation and night-riding vigilance committees. No-one knows the identity of Orry's killer. No-one.
Director's error: The floor layout of the Mont Royal ruins inside and outside doesn't match the house of the former eposides. The back wing is missing, as well as the stone back terrace and the second row of colums at the veranda. The indication of the stais to the former second floor is at a wrong location. The overall symetrical position of the outside chimney also doesn't match the a-symetrical form of the original building. And where does that old, crippled three from there in the flower arrangement in front of the veranda?

George ist devastated over the primitive ways of life at Mont Royal and offers his help, but Madeline proudly rejects it.
Madeline.................... Everything was built right here. The wood was salvaged from the old house, and then it was cut by hand and finished much the same way. The schoolhouse as well.
George........................ They did a fine job. But surely it would have been cheaper to have the lumber cut by a local mill.
Madeline....................
There is no such thing, George.
George........................ Forgive me for asking, but how much did it cost?
Prudence.................... Mr. Hazard, how very rude of you.
George........................ Miss Chaffee, Orry Main was my best friend. I come down here and I find his widow laboring in the fields like a common farmhand. I see her table is spread with an absence of meat or poultry. And I see her hands are rubbed raw. - Forgive me, Ladies. Would you indulge us with a few moments of privacy?
Madeline.................... (to Orry Jr.) You go to Jane, honey. That's a sweetheart. (Prudence and Jane leave)
George........................ I don't intend to be rude, Madeline, but I do speak directly. How much are you in debt?
Madeline.................... There is no debt, George. We live quite simply off the land. And though meat is rare I think the food is quite good, as your empty plate attests.
George........................ Madeline, I can help. Please, accept it for the sake of our friendship and what's gone between our families.
Madeline....................
George, I know you mean well with your offer. But if

Madeline.................... Yes. Orry told me. I have the other half.

Willa........................... Can I ask you another question?
Charles....................... I imagine, you're gonna ask it anyway. So why don't you just go ahead?
Willa........................... Why stay in the Army?
Charles....................... There's nothing left for me in the South anymore. Out west, there's a whole country to be found. There's a need for soldiers with experience.
Willa........................... Fighting Indians?
Charles....................... No, I don't wanna fight anyone unless they pick a fight with me. It's just what I do.
