Turner.........................
Well, lookie here, you're only half-dead. You can still work.
George........................ (coughes)
Turner.........................
Get up, Hazard. You gotta quit being o shiftless and lazy. Get up! Come on!
George........................ (coughes, rises painfully)
Turner......................... (turns over George's cot) My my. Lookie here. That general done dug himself a hole. Just like a rat. Do you think you're gonna escape like those others? Well, think again, scum. You're going down in a hole, alright, but it's gonna be six feet deep. (to his corporal) Now chain him up, till I decide how we gonna stop him from digging rat holes. (to all prisoners) I got kegs of gunpowder hidden underneath this floor. The very next man who tries to escape, I'm gonna blow you all to hell. (1)
(1) Historical: Turner refers to the spectacular and successful breakout from Libby Prison on Feb 9th, 1864, whenb 109 prisoners under Colonel Thomas E. Rose and Major A.G. Hamilton sneaked out using an abandoned kitchen and a self-dug tunnel. 48 of them were re-captured on their run-off, two drowned crossing the James River. (Wikipedia)

Charles....................... (appears) Merry Christmas. It's a little early, but what the hell.
Orry............................. Charles... (embraces him)
Charles.......................
Had a three-day leave, heard you were in
Orry............................. We got a lot to catch up on. Sit.
Charles....................... Sure is great to see you alive, Orry. I didn't wanna believe it when I saw you listed as missing.
Orry............................. I landed in a field hospital, I was lucky.
Charles....................... (takes a cigar, sits down) Your friend George wasn't so lucky.
Orry............................. What do you mean?
Charles.......................
Mosby. Rode in the camp the other day to report on his
guerilla activities. I heard him tell
Orry............................. Where is he?
Charles....................... Libby Prison.
Orry............................. He could die there, that place is a disgrace.
Charles.......................
There's nothing you can do. No more prisoner exchanges, so you can't go to

Charles....................... Nothing.
Orry............................. What do you mean, nothing? I am gonna get him out of there and you're gonna help me.
Charles....................... I don't feel to kindly about Yankees these days.

Orry and Charles appear at Libby Prison and demand to take prisoner Hazard to interrogation. When George is delivered to them in his dire condition, Captain Turner enters. Even Orry's rank as a general wouldn't stop the captain from refusing the prisoner delivery, which leads to a fight and the captain's death.
Strock......................... Well, you can't see General Winder. He's gone on leave.
Orry............................. You'll address me as 'Sir', Corporal, and you tell me who's in charge in the General's absence.
Strock......................... Yes, Sir. Captain Turner's in charge right now, Sir. But he's ah... oh, he ain't here right now neither.
Orry............................. If he is derelict in his duty, he will suffer the consequences. In the meantime you're to deliver to me a prisoner by the name of General George Hazard.
Strock......................... But it's the middle of the night, Sir. And Captain Turner, he wouldn't like it. He wouldn't like...
Orry............................. I don't give a damn what Captain Turner wouldn't like. I got orders to take this prisoner for interrogation, and that's what I mean to do, Corporal. You have'em brought here to me now.
Strock......................... Yes, Sir. (walks off, returns with George and two guards)
Orry............................. (to Strock) This man's condition in an outrage. Get his chains off of him. Now! I intend to report this entire detachment for gross neglect of duty.
Turner......................... (appears) What the hell is going on here?
Strock......................... They got orders to take him, Captain.
Turner......................... Over my dead body. Whose oders?
Orry............................. I would suggest you read this and snap to, Captain, before I have you relieved of command.
Turner......................... (reads) I never heard of no General Canby. I want this order confirmed before I hand over the prisoner. (1)
Orry............................. You don't have the authority, Captain. So out of our way, we're leaving.
Turner......................... I already told you, it's over my dead body. (dies in fight, Orry leaves with Charles and George)
Strock......................... (staggers outside) Stop those men! Grab them! They killed Captain Turner!
Director's error: When George is presented by the prison guards, he is in irons and without a hat.. After the fight, he leaves the office with Orry and Charles after put himself a hat on. There is no hint that one of the guards has brought George's hat with them.

Location scene: Belvedere, parlor and hall
At Belvedere, Christmas is being celebrated. Maude, Constance and Hope (now almost 4 years old) sing songs. Isabel's joy over an extravagant piece of jewelry from Stanley is not shared by the other women, but she still claims to show off what she owns. Maude quietly ponders over George and Billy, being in their forth winter of war. A knocking at the front door, and George suddenly appears in front of them.
(Maude, Constance
and Hope singing and playing piano: Silent
night, holy night / all is calm, all is bright / round young virgin mother and
child / holy infant so tender and mild / sleep in heavenly peace / sleep in
heavenly peace)
Hope...........................
Oh Mommy, I love the way you sing.
Isabel..........................
(openes the jewerly case) Oh,
Maude........................
(dim) They are lovely, Isabel.
Isabel..........................
Isabel..........................
Ha-ha, I shall wear these in
Isabel..........................
Nonsense. I'm not going to let their moods ruin this
special evening. We have every right to enjoy our good fortune. (kiss)
Maude........................
Oh, I'm fine. It's lovely to see Hope enjoying herself. I just keep thinking of
Billy and George. It doesn't seem like Christmas without them.
Maude........................
I can't believe, Clarissa is in the midst of that
fighting. Every night I pray for the Mains just as I pray for our family. How
can we sing about peace on earth, good will toward men after four years of war?
Dear God, how much longer must this go on? (cries
silently)
(knocking,
Butler Edward answers the door)
George........................
Merry Christmas, Edward.
George........................ Constance...

At Mont Royal, Brett works the kitchen garden, when Salem Jones rides up, offers his "help" and wants to give them groceries in return. When Jones resorts to harassing Brett, it is Semiramis with the help of a shotgun to send Jones on retreat.
Jones.......................... Hello, Brett.
Brett............................ It's Mrs. Hazard to you.
Jones.......................... Heard about your troubles, so I thought if I'd come over and see if I could help out. Things seem to be a little lean around here.
Brett............................ We're doing just fine.
Jones.......................... That's no way to talk to the man who could be your salvation. I got food.
Brett............................ We have enough.
Jones..........................
I figured you for the sensible. Surely you know what a dangerous situation you
all are in. Three women alone. But if we could come to
some arrangements, I can make sure that nobody bothers you. Not even the
Yankees, who I figure will be harder on
Brett............................ You're nothing but trash, like those squatters. We're not leaving, no matter what you do or say.
Jones.......................... Shake the tree, and all the fruit you could want will fall right into your lap. Time's on my side, Missy. (shot)
Semiramis................... You get on outta here, Salem Jones, or this other barrel's gonna blow your head off.
Jones.......................... You wouldn't do that, Semiramis.
Semiramis................... (pulls the cock) Wouldn't I? I've hated you ever since I was a little girl. Now get on outta here! Leave the horse.

When the wounded U.S. corporal makes an unexpected move, Charles shoots him dead in reflex. Jim is disgusted by Charles's cold bloddedness.
Charles.......................
(watches Union forces on march) They could head

Jim............................... Even if Fitz Lee could concentrate all three of his brigades, I'm not sure he can stop 'em either way. (1)
Charles....................... We can jump on a couple of their flank scouts to find out, where they're heading.
Jim............................... Charlie, I haven't been on my own two feet for two hours in the last three days. This old nag is as wind-brike as I am. How the heck are we gonna stop them?
Charles....................... That's too bad. (rides aside, sees a squad) Who said, the Lord isn't a rebel? Now, don't get carried away. We need at least one alive. Alright? Aim for the legs. (attack)
Jim............................... Sorry, Captain. Reckon, my aim was high.
Charles.......................

US Corporal............... Three.
Charles....................... Bound where? - Bad enough you damn Yankees burned Beaver Dam Station and our supply warehouse. Don't try my patience. Bound where? Where?! (5)
US Corporal............... R-Richmond.
Charles....................... Much obliged. (walks aside, shoots the corporal in reflex)
Jim............................... He was just reaching over because he was thirsty.
Charles....................... If he had been pulling a gun, better my mistake than me dead.
Jim............................... Charlie, you really are something. Cool as a block in an icehouse. You're some kind of killing machine, the absolute sure-fire best.
Charles....................... We gotta find Fitz Lee. You take the turnpike, I go across country. One of us is sure to get through.
Director's error: When Charles visits Orry in his Richmond office and when they both get George out of Libby Prison, he wears the rank insignia of a major on his uniform (one star on the collar). After that, on scouting, Charles is shown as a captain again (three stripes). When his partner Jim Pickles is deserting, he refers to him as Major again (rank insignia invisible beneath the coat). On his last visit at Augusta's farm, he is a captain again, and finally towards war's end, he presents himself as a major. There are no indications on intermediate promotions and demotions. Reasons for this mess could be carelessness on the direrector's side, the availability of costumes, or the scene sequence having been swapped after shooting.

Madeline.................... (openes it) It's gold.
Rafe............................. Earned with the sweat of my brow. I'd just waste it anyway, and I figured you could use it for whatever purpose...
Michael's mother...... (runs up) Miss Madeline! The soldiers picked up Michael and some of the other boys.
Madeline.................... Where did they take him?
Michael's mother...... I don't know. They said they was needed. Too many soldiers getting killed.
Madeline.................... We have to find them. They're only children.
Rafe............................. How long ago?
Michael's mother...... About two hours. Miss Madeline, I'm so scared.
Rafe............................. Don't worry about it. We'll do our best to get'em back.

Sherman concluded his "March to the Sea" from Atlanta, leaving behind a broad swathe of total destruction all the way through Georgia that is unforgotten to this day. Madeline.................... You bribed an officer?
Rafe............................. Well, I had no choice.
Madeline.................... If you had been arrested, we'd all have been in jeopardy.
Rafe............................. What should I have done? Something more honorable? You've got to wake up, Madeline. Honor's dead. It's been killed in the war. From now on, there are only transactions.
Madeline.................... Perhaps. For you that's the way you live.
Rafe............................. That's right, Ma'am, to survive.
Madeline.................... Well, some things are more important than survival.
Rafe............................. Like what, Madeline? I left the army rather than go on killing innocent human beings in a cause already doomed from the start by the stupidity of too many of it's leaders.
Madeline.................... I don't wanna hear that.
Rafe............................. I refused to be a fool. I found a better way of attacking a Yankee position, and when I returned I was accused by my commander of insubordination. If that makes me some kind of a scoundrel, so be it.
Madeline.................... I... I didn't mean to. You saved Michael's life, and I thank you for that.

Madeline.................... If the money is mine, then I'm entitled to spend it as I see fit. Uncle Miles, Justin never did one good thing for anyone in his entire life. So let's just call this poetic justice. And when his money is gone, then I'll sell the house.
Colbert........................ I'm not even sure I could find a buyer right now, let alone get a good price.
Madeline.................... Now, even if I have to sell the house at a loss, there should still be enough to help a great many people.
Colbert........................ Now, I understand your wanting to help these people that have been displaced by the war, but you can't bankrupt yourself to do it. And... and what about your son, Madeline? That house should be his someday.
Madeline.................... Thousands have been driven from their homes, slaves, freed negroes, poor whites. They have no food, no money. They have no hope. I can't just stand by and watch women and children die. I hope, my son will understand that one day when he's old enough.
Colbert........................ You're giving away everything you have.
Madeline.................... I would give more if I had it. Uncle Miles, you can't imagine the suffering.
Colbert........................ Alright, my dear. It's obvious, you're gonna do this whether I agree or not. If Justin's money isn't sufficient, I'll find a way to sell the house.
Madeline.................... Thank you, Uncle Miles. Thank you. I knew, you'd understand.

Captain Bradley confidentally informs George about complaints on Axol Iron canons being made from inferior metal and having cost mand Union soldiers' lives. An investigation showed him to have signed contracts with some Mr. Morgan, and that there is a warrant for him about to be issued.
Bradley.......................
This isn't an official visit, General, but I wanted to warn you ahead of time.
(
George........................
Unless it involves military secrets, Captain, I have nothing I wanna hide from

Bradley.......................
Sir, from what I've been able to find out, the war department has had
complaints from almost two years about defective weapons made by Axol Iron
Works. Do you know anything about such a company?
George........................
No, I've never heard of them.
Bradley.......................
A formal investigation wasn't started until recently. And they found out, that
Axol Iron is a front for another arms manufacturer: Hazard Iron.
Bradley.......................
They verified that these canons were made from cheap metals which caused some
of them to explode after prolonged use. I'm afraid,
some soldiers on the gun crews have been killed as a result.
George........................
Oh my God.
Bradley.......................
Apparently, the General's signature appears in several incriminating documents
which connect the two companies.

And it had to be somebody from the inside.
Bradley.......................
Unfortunately, you're gonna have to prove that, Sir.

I'm afraid they'll be swearing out a warrant for your arrest within the next

Bradley.......................

George........................
What else can you tell us, Captain?
Bradley.......................
There seems to be a man named Morgan. Although there's no solid evidence

Ashton....................... When are we gonna get rid of Jeff Davis already?
Bent............................ You're unusually impatient today, Ashton. I told you, those things take time, and they take money. We have a definite lack of the latter.
Ashton....................... Well, I've already given you all of mine.
Bent............................ There is someone who has just promised an enormous contribution, but I'm afraid he want's something more in return other than mere participation in our new government.
Ashton....................... What does he want?
Bent............................ Thomas Drummond, has aleays had his eye on you.
Ashton....................... That old fool? Everytime he sees me, he looks down my dress and drools. (kiss)
Bent............................ Exactly.
Ashton....................... You can't mean, he... (laughs) Why, that is the most rediculous thing I ever heard.
Bent............................ What's so ridiculous? All you have to do is spend one night with him, and fifteen-thousand Dollars in gold are ours.
Ashton....................... You can't mean that.
Bent............................ Of course I do. He knows that you and I are friends.
Ashton....................... Friends? We love each--
Bent............................ I don't recall mentioning love. Love would be the worst possible thing for us. We're equals, we are partners. Love would just get in the way of everything we want.
Ashton....................... But as I was saying before I was interrupted, we love each other's strength and power.
Bent............................ So, the you'll do it?
Ashton....................... Why wouldn't I? After all, it only makes us that much closer to what we want.
Bent............................ I knew, I could count on you.

Bent............................ Now you just be patient. (openes the gate)
Ashton....................... Why, the army would just be furious, if they knew anything about this. How'd you get so many guns?
Bent............................ Along with my military expertise, I have developed quite a flair for raising money. This was all bought with cash, donated by supporters of our cause.
Ashton....................... Like Drummond?

Exactly. Men whose ambition exceeds
their intelligence. I still need another shipment, so I have arranged

Madeline.................... There seems to be three times the amount of people we started with.
Michael's mother...... How you gonna keep this up, Ma'am? You can't feed everybody without home in the whole south?
Madeline.................... I'll do what I can for as long as I can.
Michael's mother...... Food costing the way it does, I don't see how we gonna keep this up for too long.
Rafe............................. Excuse me, Ma'am. Loo, I know that you must nearly be out of cash by now. You've been feeding these people for months. And you've also got a little baby to think of. Now, I have a little money and some very good connections in town. I could help you get more food and medicines, maybe some men to drive you instead of the boy.

Bent............................ You cannot just double the price. A deal, Sir, is a deal!
