Today "Historic Jefferson College" near Natchez, MS was founded in 1802 in the state of Mississippi as a school for higher education and named after the U.S. President and chair of the American Philosophic Society, Thomas Jefferson. After some difficult financing, the college opened on Jan 7th, 1811 starting with 15 students. When then 10 years old Jefferson Davis was there in 1818, the institution was in full use. 1819, the east wing was completed. 1830, one building was aquired my the Methodist Church, and 1839 the new West Wing was constructed. The institution was - except the Civil War period from 1863 to 1866 - constantly used als a college until it's closure in 1864, being for some time named "Jefferson Military College". Today, it is listed in the Register of National Landmarks and is open to visitors.
The building used for the movie as "barracks" and contained the bunk room for the cadets originally was the kitchen building for the college. Shortly before the filming, it was reconstructed in original fashion.
